Hey everyone - hope you've been keeping safe and well :)

I recently experienced a System Partition Failure due to a dislodged drive - therefore reverting the volume to Read only status. I had a single volume configuration, with a JBOD Raid Type. So after spending a good week and a half copying over all my data to a number of portable drives, I'm finally at the stage where I can re-allocate the drives, create a new Storage Pool and migrate my data back to my Synology.
This whole little adventure has made me much more aware of redundancy + making sure to configure a robust NAS setup/backup configuration - so I was hoping to get your advice/input into what the best way forward would be + what configuration I should be aiming for.

I'm looking to avoid spending anything extra on new drives for this configuration, but I do have a few things to play around with:
1. My current Synology is a DS218Play - with two drives, a 6GB & a 8GB
2. I have my old Synology, a DS212j, that I no longer use and was wondering if I could possibly put this to use, maybe to configure it to use as a backup of my active NAS/use it for some form of redundancy? I have 2 x 2TB HDD's that I am able to use for this purpose.
3. I have a 4TB Seagate Portable Drive, that I would be more than happy to use for the setup as well.

With all this in mind, do you have any suggestions/ideas on the best way to go about this all, as well as the RAID type more suitable for my setup?
I'm currently researching everything myself, and trying to get up to speed on how to go about it - but your input would be greatly appreciated too! (y)

Welcome to the forum!

Glad to hear you have managed to pulled away from a disaster, and nothing like a close call to give you a good wake up call ;).

DS218play with 6+8 in SHR raid array for a total usable capacity of 6TB (with 8TB drive as a redundancy one)

DS212j with 2+2 in SHR raid array for a total usable capacity of 2TB as a backup device for your critical 218 data

4TB Seagate drive connected to your 218 unit as a secondary (or primary) backup of crucial data, or connected to your 212 as a 3rd copy of crucial backed up data already on your 212.

scenario A): 218+Portable >212 (backup to portable as well as 212)
scenario B): 218 > 212 > Portable (backup to 212 that will then do another backup to Portable)

It would be even better if 212 was an offsite device if possible.

Finally, maybe consider some of the Synology C2 cloud services (like C2 Storage) for that absolute crucial data (up to 300GB lets say), as your final disaster location (I know you said you don't want to spend, but just putting it out there as an option).
