I’m fed up of all the services mining my information on their servers.
Call me paranoid, but I’m always looking for services that respect my privacy. I know that I’m the product when things are thrown to me for free on the internet, but it got to a point where it’s really scary!

Recently, I’ve switched to an email service called ProtonMail and I like them so far. They are based in Switzerland and offer free and paid services.
Check them out and if you’re interested, make sure to read about the differences between the .com and .ch domains BEFORE you register for a mailbox.

May the force be with you :)

Another Proton user here :D. Still, not my primary mail but I have had them since they started the service. The main reason that I don't use them full time is that only recently they offered usage via a desktop app but its paid service.

Atm, I'm looking into getting up Mailplus as well as soon as I get all my other Syno's up and running and some free time.

Yes, that's why I'm not using them. I don't like online service, I like my desktop client. Also, if you have multiple email addresses then this is a must.

Hm, I've read running personal email server could be a pita. Well, at least for me, I guess. I'm not sure if I can handle all stuff that comes with it. Hm, I still haven't find time to set up and run Bitwarden on my NAS, so email server ... :D

I'm using FastMail and am really happy with it. I can send and receive from my own domain email addresses as well as my iCloud and Gmail accounts.

I've read good things about ProtonMail though.

Why not run your own e-mail service then?
I understand, Shadow. I’m running mail server on the 118, mainly to save on hosting and for branding at an early stage of a project.

But not everyone is willing to deal -or have the knowledge- with the colossal pain of setting up a mail server. And that pain increases two folds if your IP address is dynamic and your ISP is blocking port 25.

In fact, I advise against it unless you have the will and the need. It’s not for the faint hearted.

Ok but I disagree that this increases the pain. I have MailPlus running on my DS216+II for 2 years without problems, while I have a dynamic IP. DDNS solves this simple little issue. And for outgoing mail you'll have to use your ISP's mail relay.

I’m referring to setting it up pain not running it pain.

No problems with DDNS. It’s the PTR record that will be messed up with the use of a dynamic IP address, then you’ll have the almost mandatory task of configuring DKIM, DMARK and SPF –although this should be configured either way, if one is serious about running a mail server– to maximize the chances of your messages going to an inbox instead of spam or being rejected.

If you have port 25 blocked then you’ll have to use a mail relay. Another setup requirement. Even if it’s the ISP relay, that needs configuration too.

Finally, configuring your own clients to access the mail server securely is one more step (on client and server).

All of the above is not exactly novice friendly stuff in my opinion.

That’s my experience, I hope there’s an easier way and that I did it the hard way, because I’m about to repeat this again in the near future when I upgrade to another DS from the current 118 and I’m dreading it :(
