I'm about 7 days into the process of setting up a new DS1819+ using SHR.

Everything was going smoothly until I received this message today:

Dear user,

The bad sectors on drive 1 on DS1819+ have increased. Statistics have shown that drives with bad sectors are more likely to be damaged than those without bad sectors. We recommended backing up your data immediately to ensure data integrity. Afterward, please go to Storage Manager > HDD/SSD > S.M.A.R.T. to run the Extended Test and refer to the test results for the recommended actions.

Drive information:

Brand: Seagate
Model: ST80xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Capacity: 7.3 TB
Serial number: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Firmware: SC61

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Normal
IronWolf Health Status: Not Tested
Drive reconnection count: 0
Bad sector count: 8
Drive re-identification count: 0

How serious is this issue? Should I immediately replace that drive?

I've had drives with bad sectors last for years. I had a drive on standby for over 1 year before finally replacing it.

Bad sectors (blocks) basics:
- take the sectors as “lot of drawers” in your cabinet. You have stored lot of stuff in the drawers. But some of the drawers you can’t open (or insert). Sometime the damaged drawers you don’t use, because you don’t need the stuff frequently. Then you don’t feel a kind of discomfort with such situation.

Bad sectors in your HDD and reasons:
- sw based damage (better case) - background of such damage is frequently based on a failure during a write operation to this sectors(s), e.g. unexpected power surge, failure between package a and OS, etc. ... You can repair such damaged sectors by relocation of such data and rewriting of them.
- physical damage (worst case) - you can’t repair such sector(s)

How you can check more details from your disk health is written in this post.

Final stage:
- if you have bad blocks increase - this is a first warning for you - change your disk
- backup your data, because only such methods can help you bring your data back from damaged sectors.
- use UPS

After thinking about it overnight, I think I'll replace the drive now. For peace of mind, I'd rather know that this new NAS system is functioning at 100%.

Thanks for that elaboration. I think I'll just replace the drive to avoid future issues happening at a less convenient time.
