Ok... I'm digging out an old thread, but I've never found an answer anywhere:
I'm sharing a folder on my NAS (latest DMS of course) with my Mac (Mojave) using SMB 3 setup like this:
138

All work well (can create/rename/delete files and can create/delete folders) but I cannot rename folders from my Mac (I get the admin box below - and even when I enter my a NAS admin username/password, it still doesn't work)

To rename the folder I have to do it on the NAS!

Any idea?

That Mac authorisation box is asking for a Mac admin, not NAS admin.

Does this happen for first-level folders within the share, or for sub-folders too?

I'm recalling similar things but can't remember if it was SMB/AFP/WebDAV, or some combination of all three. I'm sure it was to do with the permissions for the shared folder itself (i.e. it's Unix permissions for that folder [directory]) but once within a first-level folder then more folders and files could be accessed and changed as normal.

Is it an inheritance issue? Hmmm, can't remember.

That what I thought at the begining but even with MacOS admin login I get this error

At all levels

Maybe the problem is there, but it has to be a pretty common error, since this is happening on my three shares, encrypted and not encrypted.

Just for a test, does this work via AFP protocol?
That's a good question but the issue with using AFP is that (curiously) it was causing me issues with my Timemachine backups on my NAS (so I don't dare turning it on again), and also the fact that would lose this location in Finder

...
don't ask me why

So AFP is causing me more trouble than SMB.
Now I need to figure out why SMB is playing that renaming thingy on me :p

I understand was just wondering (considering you can use both) is the renaming issue present on both protocols.
I agree that curiousity is a good thing, but I'd prefer doing this test with a spare NAS, which I don't have. Based on

AFP is causing more issue that it's solving, so I'd prefer to try fixing the SMB approach (if it's really a SMB problem; as fredbert said, it might also be a permission issue)... I'll have dig into the permissions I think.
