Hi,

I use C2 for daily off-site backups - which works great (including versioning and deduplication).
As a second layer I have weekly Backups on an external USB HD as single-version (for quick access to the full amount of data if something breaks).

There is a lot of redundant data, as I also have to get ActiveBackups on the external USB off-site.
Now I realized I need far more than double the volume-size on my external HD than on my C2 account - I assume due to deduplication on C2.

Why can't we have deduplication on external USB HDs when backing up with HyperBackup? I tried to format the external HD with btrfs (like my internal volume) but this option is not available for external HDs).

Any ideas / suggestions?
thanks,
paradeiser

But C2 also does dedup for HyperBackups - right?

At least it says so on the website, and also when I added the ActiveBackup-share the data growth was quite moderate (compared to the external drive).

What level of dedupe are you after?

My research recently leads me to understand the Syno Business backup does file level dedupe - handy for multiple machine images etc.

Nothing offer block level dedupe... not even hyperbackup as best I can tell.

YOu can implement it manually as an offline even for NAS file storage but that saving is not (I believe) passed along in the backup process. The pointers to deduped blocks would just point ans the backup task will just backup the full uncompressed / undeduped content.

You might want to confirm your active backup disk usage, there is (at least on NAS I use it on) a bug that seems to indicate more disk usage than it actually does. This is active backup data folder properties:

Where this is my storage pool:

According to the properties of the active backup data, it takes up double the total space available....just a thought.
