Hello,

I'm planning on purchasing the DS918+ for home use and surveillance. I have picked out the Amcrest cameras I would like to use but noticed there is a camera note next to some. The camera model is IP8M-T2499EW-28MM

Here are the notes in the compatibility list:

  • Rotation can only be set to 0 or 180 degrees.
  • The HTTP option for RTSP transport protocol is not supported.
  • Motion detection is not supported.
I don't really understand the first two points. The camera can be rotated in the holder when installing so I don't know what they mean by that. And does the HTTP/RTSP support mean I can't stream over HTTP from a browser?

My main concern is the motion detection. Why isn't this supported? Is there a way around it like using Amcrest's own software or other setup tricks?

Thanks

Rotation can only be set to 0 or 180 degrees.
I believe it’s referring to image rotation. Useful when the camera is mounted upside down or in an odd orientation. Not important if you don’t have the need.

The HTTP option for RTSP transport protocol is not supported.
Not sure about this. But it might mean what you’ve just said. However, you’ll most likely use Synology’s DS Cam on mobile or the Synology Surveillance Client on the desktop, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Motion detection is not supported.
From my experience, it’s a bit finicky. Personally I record 24/7 and don’t care about any of that. Tried it and found it unreliable. Sometimes it’s triggered by things like a cat passing by or a sudden change in the clouds. You can fine tune it, but it’s not easy to find the right balance. I record a window of one week. To be fair, I didn’t give it much time testing it with different settings.

However, if you need to scan your recordings on daily basis to see what went through the day, then this might be useful as the software (Surveillance Station) can take you through were “events” occurred on the timeline, which will hopefully minimize the need to ”hunt” for them.

Once you configure the camera, check under
IP Camera > Edit > Event detection
See if there’re any options provided there.
For my camera I can see three options.

Ok thanks. I just wanted check before I make the purchase. I'll have to see once everything is connected how it works.

If you haven’t purchased anything yet, try to spend time exploring other camera options. From my readings, it seems that relying on the camera’s motion detection is better than Surveillance Station’s, provided that the camera is good and capable of course.

Read about “line crossing” capable cameras.

Good luck :)

So does this mean Amcrest can still send me motion detection notifications outside of Surveillance Station even if Synology doesn't support it for this particular model?

It should. I use a Reolink C1 Pro an have Surveillance Station on my secondary NAS (a 412+) set store the data. I can still set the camera itself to send email alerts via the Reolink app.

I’m with @durin.
If it says it has motion detection then I believe yes, but I believe it won’t integrate with SS (according to point 3 in your post). So for instance, SS will not show where motion occurred on the timeline. You’ll have to rely on what Amcrest provides.
Dload the camera’s user guide and try to see how it works. Or try contacting them and asking.

It might simply take snapshots when motion is detected and email them (or upload them) to you. I have an old camera that does that.
