My home video files are stored under the Photo folder of DSM rather than under the Video folder which are only reserved for downloaded movies.

When accessing the mapped Photo folder in Windows 10 or Photo Station, all home video files therein are visible and playable. However when accessing synology nas on TV via DLNA, only the top level file folders are shown, with no content shown underneath. This suggests incorrect settings on viewing permissions, I think.

Access permission had been granted to all users. However, checking through Control Panel>Shared Folder>photo>Edit, I found that the 2nd box “Hide sub-folders and files from users without submission” had been ticked. I tried many time to un-select it but was not successful. It seems that I had to do it through Photo Station.

My question is whether I’m on the right track in resolving this issue and even if not, how to un-select it.

Thx.

DLNA/UPnP serving is managed by Media Server using the folders selected in Control Panel -> Indexing Service. This is a system level service not user level... DLNA receivers don't log into the NAS to access the DLNA server.

You can make service changes in Media Server: DMA menu style (the menu structure seen by receivers); transcoding; Device List to change profile of device.

Thx for your clarification on system level and user level setting. This helps me a lot. However I still do not know how to make video files under the photo folder to be visible on my Samsung 4k smart TV. Noting that there is no problem in viewing them in DS Photo.

1. What I would do is to select one of the three custom DMA menu style items and try editing them.

The custom styles are used to enable you to make menus to suit your purpose but in doing so some of the options allow you to select which folder it acts on. But the selector only shows permissible folders of the media type you’re configuring. This should at least confirm /photo or below it is being indexed for videos.

2. Another test is to use a different DLNA receiver such as VLC, mConnect app, etc. Do they show the videos?

3. Have you enabled device filtering in Media Server and your TV is blocked?

4. Do you mean a DS photo app running on your TV works?

Thx. It seems to work now after going through various steps as suggested.
1. All videos under /photo are indexed. It took me a while to figure out. I went to Control panel->Media Indexing-?>indexed folder->ticked both photo and video boxes in "photo".
2. I have not tried VLC as the app is not available in Samsung TV
3. I can't see any device filtering in Media Server
4. Sorry, I meant DS photo on iphone and not on TV as it's not available.

On my TV (DLNA) now, although video files are not displayed under /photo, I can go to video under which a "photo" folder is created, containing all indexed video files stored under /photo in the nas.

That's the Indexing Service I mentioned above :) . It defines and periodically scans these folders for the assigned media types.

Maybe I wasn't precise enough: I meant try a different DLNA receiver on any device. The intention was to see if it worked by some other method.

3. I can't see any device filtering in Media Server
On the DMA Compatibility page: "Restrict access to Media Server for..." and the Device List button provides more per device settings.

OK. I've a 2009 TV that's only a screen for my AV-amp, Apple TV, etc. So I'm unaware of what 'smart' TVs do and don't do.

Media Server is serving media according to the three types defined in Indexing Service not based on file system folders. The menu presented is structured per media type and, as I mentioned before, using the selected DMA menu style. If you look at a custom DMA menu style you'll see how it works.

Brilliant. Your step by step explanation on the setting of menu under Media Server made me in better control of the synology nas. Love it. 👍
