Is it possible to alter/hack a DS412+ ID to RS814+ or a DS415+ ID to RS818+ to accept unsupported DSM installation successfully?
Both pairs have the same CPU & the number of HDD bays, except the physical layouts are different.
This has been done successfully to a few Synology Disk Stations to gain further DSM support.
For example when DSM 7 comes out, some might like to try it on their unsupported device.
Cheers

Have find some written instructions on how to go about it by editing the /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf file and replace the ID there. Then update the DSM in stages to reach the latest version.
I am more worried about what happens if the update is not successful. What if the DS turns into a a door stop?

Morning Gents and HNY!

back to the topic. My point - when two Atoms seems to be same and the reality is different:
DS412+
Intel Atom D2700 Dual Core 2.13GHz ... this is my suggestion, because nowhere in Syno docs is a description about kind of the Intel Atom, but D2700 was one and only available CPU before DS412+ release date with 2.13GHz

DS415+
Intel Atom C2538 Quad Core 2.4GHz ... 100% sure

RS814+
Intel Atom D2700 Dual Core 2.13GHz ... same as above

RS818+
Intel Atom C2538 Quad Core 2.4GHz ... 100% sure

Major difference between older D2700 (Q3/2011) and C2538 (Q3/2013) is in the reason why the older CPU doesn’t support - Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x)
Then research is done and this is my strong recommendation for anyone- don’t waste a time with change of earth rotation.

Am I right, that the question was targeted about support of Synology VMM package?

Hi,
Not VMM, but DSM suport for unsupported devices. To try DSM 7 for example.
DS412+ ID to RS814+ (separate pairs)
or
DS415+ ID to RS818+ (separate pairs)

"This has been done successfully to a few Synology Disk Stations to gain further DSM support.

I have upgraded the RAM in both DS412+ (2GB) & DS415+ (8GB) to the maximum, so I hope they will be able to handle DSM 7 when it is available. Not sure about the DS412+ with only 2GB RAM tough...

it is not about how much RAM do you have, but what kind of RAM:
DDR3 running with 800/1066MHz in max. single channel supported in old Atom D2700 architecture (DS412+/RS814+)
isn't same as
DDR3/DDR3L running with 1600MHz in dual channel supported in Atom C2358 architecture (DS415+/RS818+)

The speed of RAM supported by CPU is frequently more important feature (or bottleneck) for dramatic system upgrade as is in DSM 7 case.

You have to count with that, I have also singe DS1811+ out of planed DSM 7 support. That is a life. For me it is ok, because it us just backup site of second instance in my 3-2-1 scheme.

Just an off topic, 412+ can run fine with 4GB as well. Have one for the past 9y running with it.

Still I agree, if it out of official support, it’s out. Not to mention that we are still about 4-6mo away from the release. Those models will be even older. Makes you wonder if messing with such old models and new dsm has any point?

For me 412 is a solid docker off-site backup device with a local Plex (no transcoding) server as well. Still a decent machine nowadays.

None of your comments help in regards to my questions jey (giga pester).
I am getting really annoyed, where is that FLY swatter?

then you need to find a way how to operated your data with system which is not assigned for your HW. For me it’s too risky from data responsibility point of view.
It is same than operate Xpenology.

I find your comment “annoying”, disrespectful and irresponsible. People are trying to help and discuss the issue, yet you come back with an insult.
Maybe you should excuse yourself from this forum if you’re “getting really annoyed” after only four posts. I’m sure you won’t be missed.
