Question Hyper Backup Setup

Question Hyper Backup Setup

Hello,

I wanted to check how others have set up their Hyper Backups. Do you do individual tasks for each shared folder, a few tasks with multiple shared folders, or one task with all shared folders?

I'm thinking a few tasks with multiple shared folders. For larger shared folders, like my video and photos folders, creating one task per folder, thoughts?

Cheers,
Josh

it is up to you and performance of the whole environment & backup features (encryption, ...), that can make significantly slow the backup/restore process.
Then:
  • small parts are faster as large independent groups
  • if you lose one backup target group, you have still rest of them.
The backup is successful not when you finish backups, but when you successfully restore the data. And time is your enemy.

And welcome in this community!

to be sure!
just thinking if you need backup movies, or just save them again whenever needed. It is horrible space eater, just for few minutes of watching. But it is up to you.

I’ve never really looked into snapshots, how do they work and how much space do they take up?
Basically its working on a deduplication method. Bottom line deltas get written so if there are not many changes you won’t lose too much space. For me it’s great, fast with versioning way to get back any file on the original or custom location. Perfect for near instant docker map restore points if an image corrupts the volume in any way. Got me out of trouble a few times already.

Thanks @Rusty
I might set it up and see what’s what. I guess with HyperBackup I thought I already had versioning capabilities, but this might take things a step further.

Is there any reason not to use both HyperBackup and Snapshot at the same time?

I wish they would add the ability to hyper backup to local network locations over smb or something easier than rsync. I had to download some rsync utility to install on a second windows computer/file server, which has a ton of storage space. So in addition to offsite backup, I also have a hb copy on this file server which is local.

Can someone please fill me in - how do I make a file copy of the entire disk? All Synology tools (in particular Hyper Backup) seem quite daft about this, giving the impression that I can only do per-folder backups. That is VERY inconvenient.

Using Synology is time-consuming for newcomers... the simplest things are not...

Can you kindly be more specific, please? OF COURSE I would like to specify multiple source folders, how is it done?!

I also find that using USB Copy, I cannot create more than one backup task targeting the same USB drive?

I am getting pretty frustrated here - what should have been a straight-forward 5-minute effort (setting up a complete file copy to a USB disk) has no visible solution after more than an hour of looking around trying to find anything that works.

I have no need for lots of automation, I just want to create one deep offline copy of everything, in a readable format (files). Is it a mistake to have more than one shared folder on a Synology NAS?

For a readable format. You’ll need to format your backup drive on your PC or Mac, then attach it to you NAS.

Start hyper backup
Choose the single version option (2nd on the left)
Click next (this is where you choose the destination). Most likely the external drive you’ve attached. Maybe this is what’s confusing you.
Click next.
Choose the volume(s). Most likely only one “volume 1”
Follow through with timing, frequency and rotation.

Note that this way you’ll have only the latest version of the files when copied on that backup disk (hence the name, single version). No history. I would strongly recommend another backup with history.

I hope this is what you’re looking for.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

The disk formatting is not an issue, all disks have standard formatting.
I have now figured out that the rather cryptic /usbshare1_2 folder is the external USB drive. I admit that selecting the destination before the source got me a bit confused.

USB Copy does not work - it only lets me select a single folder to copy, and it does not allow me to store more than one folder copy on the same external USB drive.

I am now managing by

1. Creating a Hyper Backup of everything (~100 GB). I understand that I can only get data back from there if I have the Hyper Backup software. I really do not trust any backups that require a special program to read them (in this case Hyper Backup), but at least I get a copy of everything.

2. Painstakingly file-copying everything to another USB drive via a client machine that has access to the folders on the NAS. I can only copy one folder at a time, and need to make sure I get all folders. Since this is a super-deep offline copy, that is kind of OK, but it takes a lot more time than expected.

@joheben, you wrote:

So, let's clean up your own mess first to understanding scope.

A. What is the purpose = file copy of the entire disk?:
i) data backup = to be ready restore your last backup when your disk (in NAS) will pass away
ii) data transport to different location or to portable media (USB stick)

iii) other

B. Do you need one time entire disk copy from NAS into USB attached disk? Y/N
I don't know, what NAS do you have. However, please take into consideration, that you can't copy DSM system files, but you can backup installed packages (include their setup).

C. Did you mean = the disk copy = is copy of your Shared folder/s operated in your NAS? Y/N

D. Did you mean = multiple source folders = Shared folders or particular folder in Shared folder tree?

E. Did you read carefully Synology KB for - How to back up your data to USB with Hyper Backup.
What isn't clear?

F. Did you mean = setting up a complete file copy to a USB disk = is mistakenly used "file" instead "entire folders"? Y/N

G. All files used for Copy or Backup (Hyper Backup) you can find in readable format and you can Copy/Restore precise folder/s or file/s back to NAS. It is general feature.

Others:
It is not a mistake to have more than one shared folder on a Synology NAS. It is useful feature.
Using Synology is time-consuming for newcomers... the simplest things are not... .... Yes it can be frustrating, when you can't read tutorials and use a hooray action, w/o preparation. But as you see we can help you.

If you have trouble understanding that "entire disk" here means simply all files on the disk, let's just stop here. Most experienced techies understand the distinction between "disk copy" and "file copy" without further explanation. You are as confusing as the Synology system... ;-)

Anyway, I got a good reply from someone else. Good day to you.

I thought so :)

What do you mean by ”all disks”?
If you need a readable format. You should format that USB disk on your PC/Mac first and choose single version. This way you can unplug the USB disk from your DS and connect it to your PC/Mac and see the files.

See the point above.

No. But, you may want to give USB Copy a looksee, as it has this feature.
