my new router (Asus RT-AX88U) supports link aggregation on LAN1 and LAN2, so i thought i might as well configure it for the NAS.
was an easy process, enabled the LAG on the router. went to the NAS, created a Balance-TCP bond, and after a bit of applying it came back and said success.

Network Status 2000 Mbps, Full duplex, MTU 1500

i'll probably never see the benefits of it, but it would have been rude not to set it up anyway!

With balanced LAG you will see nothing, except when you have two routers aggregated to your BOND.

When you need to see real LAG advantages = more performance, you need setup the BOND by 802.3ad or Dynamic LAG. But the router needs to support it.

More you can read here

just for clear picture of another readers (when they would like to use the Bonding in NAS)

when it’s :
It is 802.3ad, and the router does support it

then isn’t:

...created a Balance-TCP bond, and after a bit of applying it came back and said success.

because Balancing isn’t same as Dynamic LAG (or LACP or 802.3ad). For Load balance you don’t need special router feature:

No idea where your settings screen grab came from but that's not what it looks like on my nas

We have some misunderstandings there, that need to be resolved.

There is different setup (screen and names convention) of DSM Link Aggregation Mode:
- for DSM with disabled Open vSwitch (no Virtual Machine Manager installed "VMM") ... this is a default setup of every single DSM
- for DSM with enabled Open vSwitch (with VMM)... Control panel/Network/Network interface/Manage/Open vSwitch settings

Described situation you can also find in then official Syno KB

There is also described this situation:

FINAL stage:
both LAG instructions are correct (my also my M8 @Rusty), because it depends on your starting situation (VMM in your DSM or not), which I have recently added to this post, so that some readers are not confused from now.
This is not case of old of new DSM version. no need to worry that some of you have an older version of DSM. This is valid feature, dependent on VMM usage.

Simple:
when you don't use Virtual machines in your NAS, there is valid this screen for LAG setup:

when you use Virtual machines in your NAS, there is valid this screen for LAG setup:

OP said LAN1 and LAN2 not WAN1 or WAN2. No 'router' involved in the LAN aggregation he is talking about.

OP said LAN1 and LAN2 not WAN1 or WAN2. No 'router' involved in the LAN aggregation he is talking about.

LAG has various methods for aggregation (parallelization) or redundancy (balance) multiple network nodes
Then it is necessary to use "right" name for right scenarios, otherwise it will be a base of mistakes.

In home level routers (foundation of this post) you have integrated also a switch services. All of them have certified or just mentioned (up to vendor) features, e.g. LAG.

There wasn't mentioned WAN in my post (read it carefully again), just this one:
With balanced LAG you will see nothing, except when you have two routers aggregated to your BOND.
then balanced LAG is really useful for scenario when you need "balance" traffic from two independent (redundant) sources = why it's called Adaptive Load Balancing in Linux bonding driver (used by Synology also).

Finally there is now clearly described attitude and reason of Synology to use two different setup/name convention for the LAG.
Solved, done.
