Hi all

I've a DS418 with 4x4TB drives in an SHR volume. File system is ext4. The DS418 is running DSM 6.2. Main use is a file server for videos and photos. I'm looking to purchase a DS918+ to take advantage of more power and upgradeable RAM to hopefully speed up thumbnail creation etc. Looking at DiskStation Manager - Knowledge Base | Synology Inc. states the only way to migrate is via hyper backup rather than straight disk swap. However, I've seen posts/videos where users have migrated between systems that don't meet the criteria in the above "How To" guide which leads me to believe something may be possible. (I've not found a scenario with my exact devices - DS418 to DS918+). I'm not bothered about losing apps/configuration (although I know most config can be backed up) but just want to ensure my data (videos/photos) is preserved. Can I do a straight disk swap which will get me to a least a basic install of DSM with all my data intact?

Hope someone can advise or maybe have done something similar.

Cheers

I can sympathize with your situation from a previous (unexpected!) experience with FS1018. I'm not aware of a work-around. But you might try posting links to the unsupported migration posts/videos you mentioned, in the hope someone here will have a more helpful response.

Meanwhile, as suggested on other forums where similar questions have been posted, this could be an opportunity to enhance your backup capability by repurposing the DS418 and associated drives as a target for multi-version backups from the new DS918+. However, I understand that scenario comes with additional expense.

It is possible, with some trade-offs/package reinstalls ... but first...

I understand this comment in relation to migration, however... your disks are ext4 formatted, and the 918+ is capable of btrfs format, which offers bitrot protection lacking in ext4. A pure disk swap would not permit the conversion of ext4 to btrfs.

If bitrot protection is of no interest, then we can further explore disk migration consequences.
