anyone using or set up pihole in docker?
i've downloaded the official docker image, set it up and it "seems" to be working.

however two things.

all devices get reported as 172.17.0.1 in the pihole dashboard, which makes it tricky for admin purposes.
i can't seem to see a way to add local DNS entries/routes.

There are topics and resources on Pihole configuration on the forum. Search for it a bit please.

Of the top of my head do you have ServerIP variable set to your local NAS IP? Also are you running this container in a bridge or host network configuration?

yes the ServerIP variable is set to 192.168.1.2 (which is the IP of the NAS).
the setup instructions i followed left the network settings as bridge.

Move it to host network and try again. If you wanna leave it in bridge this will probably not work. What are your port mappings? Specifically for 53/UDP and 53/TCP. What guide did you use?

out of interest, where are these?
i search for pihole in resources and it came back with nothing, and searching for pihole in the forum doesn't bring up much either - unless the search function isn't playing nice for me.

Well, that should work, but if its not registering your local nas IP will be a problem. As I said, move it to host network and try again.

well pihole was working (ie it was blocking ads etc), however it's just that every client was being reported as 172.17.0.1 so the dashboard reported every client as being just the one.

You are correct my mistake. There are no resources for it, but there are a few topics open that are worth looking into.

Have you tried running it as a host network conteiner? Any change there? You might look into an alternative solution such as ADGuard. Maybe it will be a better fit for you.

i did briefly set it up using host, but it then disabled any port settings etc, and when it was complete i had no idea how to actually connect to it, or what the IP address was supposed to be.

i've used pihole a lot previously hosted on a pi, so i'm quite familiar with it. it's just getting it set up correctly via docker that i'm struggling with.

i tried adguard before, and didn't like it that much.

of course, if i do get pihole setup, i still need to be able to set up static DNS routes for local resources.

Well, this is expected considering that all host containers are running on their designated ports. The IP address in this case would be the same as when in bridge, your NAS IP.

fair enough

i got it set up using host rather than bridge.
so the webui is accessible via 192.168.1.2:8084/admin

however, i can't use 192.168.1.2:8084 as a dns server because windows (for example) only lets you enter an IP address with no port number.

so i guess that method won't work.

Here is a good video that explains how to install pihole on synology. The HA part you don't have to do.

watched that, but was a bit confused about the 192.168.2.x range being created.
at one point i thought it was going to end up with the pihole on a 192.168.1.x IP that was accessible, but that doesn't seem to be the case?

You don't have to mention the port in windows. Just ip is enough.

This is what you have to do if you use the --macvlan methode.
