Dear Folks,

I am new to Synology and very new to NAS. I am seeking a quick help to layout of NAS within my setup - see attached picture. I would like to add PoE switch and NAS cameras. So getting the NAS in the correct position with respect to Cable box and Mesh networking (Orbi) is important.

My experience is somewhat limited, I have searched the forums, but can't find a suggestion.

Regards
ANDREW

Sorry, maybe this will work o_O

I guess I'm trying to work out, am I best to plug the NAS into the Plusnet cable box, or the Orbi or use a PoE switch?

I hope the cat's neck gets better!!

Regards
ANDREW

Personally I would add a switch. PlusNET cable >Orbi (10.0.0.1) > NEW Switch (so 2/5 ports in use).

After that add NAS, 2x POE Reolink to that switch as well, and leaving laptop to the Orbi via wire as it is. This way if Orbi drops out, you will still have lan access and Internet access (via switch + Plusnet).

Some security question:
- is there 100% sure, that your ISP (PlusNet) can't manage externally your cable box? If no, don't connect there sensitive devices directly.

Based on your (still rotated) description:
1. your cable box isn't in bridge mode, then you have NATed all WAN connection to Orbi router. This is not ideal situation (security/performance reasons)

2. you don't define what exact Orbi router you have in operation. But follow rock/paper/scissors methodology you have maybe this one - Orbi Tri-Band Mesh WiFi Router (RBR20) ..... because this is one and only MESH supported router in current Orbi product line.
Then you have just one free 1Gbps port for wired device = switch or NAS

3. When you need use PoE devices connected to a switch, you need to be sure, that the switch supports the PoE standards required by connected devices + is able provide sufficient power supply for each port independently. More here:
Thing twice, how many ports you will need:
- 1x router connection
- 1x NAS
- max 3x for PoE devices
maybe a reserve of ports for additional (future) devices is suitable for your consideration

4. when you purchase the switch, you will connect the NAS into the switch. Then you will meet double NAT troubles for the NAS from WAN (Surveilance system, NAS orchestration, ...), but OK.

Just curious (I remember some from my 2y old research):
- is there still problem of VLANs spanning across multiple SSIDs ? E.g. for Guest WiFi, IoT devices?
If yes, take care about your security. Because this is dangerous.

PS:
- it will be really nice topology for Ubiquiti Unifi (router, switch, APs) include MESH.

when there is no way to use your WAN connection in bridge mode, try to find in the cable box setup for:
remote management protocol TR-069
and disable it
you have to check it many times in future, because when ISP will remotely change a firmware in the box, it will be enabled (may be).
in this case you can connect new switch directly to the cable box, otherwise you have doors opened to your house devices.

Dear Rusty and Jeyare

Thank you.

The Orbi I have is RBR50 and two RSB50 satellites.

Whilst I'm pretty good at technical stuff (drones, PCs, lathes, woodwork) I'm brand new to network and NAS. I will try the suggestion and research your advice to understand " protocol TR-069", "double NAT troubles" and "bridge mode"

How long would you think it would take to set this up? I guess I will need to change IP addresses on Orbi (10.0.0.1) and use a common IP address on the entire network?

Thank you. Your answers have got me started.

Regards
ANDREW

Bridge mode
for the bridge mode setup (that will solve your first security) you have to write or call directly to your ISP. There are these possible answers:
- no, we don't support bridge mode
- yes, we can remotely switch on the bridge mode (TR-069 existence)
- yes, you have to switch it by yourself (they don't have resources to switch it, even when the TR-069 is ON). Ask them how.

From the moment of switching to the bridge mode, you will see your WAN IP in your ORBI router. Your cable router IP and accessibility will be disappeared = reason of this process.

When you have RBR50 router, you have rest 3 ports for LAN devices (Switch, NAS,?).
NAT and others setup will be controlled by this router.

No Bridge mode with disabled TR-069 protocol
- just find the TR-069 setup (disable) or ask directly the ISP how to
- then you can chose both proposed architecture from @Rusty or from me

No Bridge mode, no disabled TR-069 protocol
- it's better to connect every devices behind your router (your managed security point)

Dear Jeyare,

Been in contact with PlusNet, the Plusnet Hub One can't support "Bridge Mode".

This being the case is my best solution as follows?:

Connect ORBI (RBR50) to back of Plusnet Hub One, then connect my PoE+ switch to ORBI, then connect my NAS to PoE+ switch.

THANK YOU for your kind help so far.

ANDREW
