I would like to see a rackmount version of the plus line (DS218+ etc.). I want the better performance over what the RackStation RS217 offers. However, I need short depth (330mm) so that rules out the RS820+.

Anyone else want something similar? 2bay or 4bay is fine.

to be sure:
RS1219+ is little bit over performed vs DS218+
and RS1219+ is 2U not 1U

reasons-
1. CPU:
when RS1219+ has Intel Atom C2538 ... advantages:
- 4 cores threads vs 2
- higher base clock speed (2.4 vs 2.0GHz), ok there is Turbo burst for Celeron to 2.5GHz
- supports Supports ECC
.... DS218+ has "just" Intel Celeron J3355

different point of view:

for similar price (or better) you can purchase better NAS than RS1219+ ... it is DS1819+, reasons:
- CPU .. newest Intel Atom C3538 with same cores, but 8MB Cache (vs 2MB in RS1219+)
- RAM - DDR4 2400MHz (vs DDR31600 in RS1219+) ... include ECC
- SSD cache support for NVMe disks (doesn't supported in RS1219+)
and really better airflow (cooling) than for the RS1219+ ... when you will use rack w/o A/C
OFC ... 8bay vs 6bay

count all the horses before a purchase!

You are correct. I want the DS1819+ but in a 1U short depth form factor! ABMX Servers makes what I want, but it does not run Synology software.

you need count what is your primary target:
- 1U
or
- performance
or
- cost
... or whatever .... but, form my point of view is 1U as first (or mandatory) objective pointless. It's your choice

Size, performance, cost. That is three things and I'm asking for only two. I need short depth and performance. They exist today and Synology should consideration making this SKU. Hard drives are huge, two is plenty. Who needs 8 bays? That's crazy. Those who do don't have a short depth limitation.

I suspect that Synology view RS as primarily a business line. They probably see that business will buy to meet a requirement ... traditional NAS: backup, file shares; server NAS: office applications; virtualisation. Then the purchase will be for that and hosting will have to accommodate whatever meets it. With office cloud services and hosted VMs then the old data centre services are pushed to Google, Microsoft, Amazon etc ... this is happening from small to enterprise businesses. Therefore that would mean traditional NAS features are maybe more likely the focus for small businesses and the RS217 might address it, or the RS819.

A rack-mounted 'DS218+' would currently be a rack shelf and a DS218+. Laid on it's side and slightly elevate for the side-vent would be approx 3U. That'd get the performance and cost but not size.

I guess that Synology are banking on the buyer's criteria placing 'must be Synology' higher than 'must be 1U and 1/2 depth'. If it must be Synology then a cheap RS+ just replaces a sale of a cheap DS+ and it has cost Synology a lot of money to have two products competing against themselves.

There's no harm in submitting a feature request to Synology.

Purchase of NAS is similar to purchase of a car. When you take care only about:
- must be short as first mandatory requirement
- must be strong (performance)... btw, what does mean the strong argument and for what, for whom?
- specific brand (vendor), because features

then you have small choice range. Frequently under or overestimated.

... re who needs more than 2 bay NAS, even 8?
there is same answer as for Q- who needs a truck?
