Hello everyone,
My reset button seems working by itself and resets in "mode 1" the admin password, network config, ... in my new DS918+ (grabbed from Amazon Warehouse).

Any idea how to disable that hardware button?

Best regards

to avoid different reason you need check this way first:

when the reset issue happened “itself” during regular DSM operation, what you can see in logs?
Search for:
- Improper shutdown
or another abnormal activity in the time of the reset.

when your log is clear from such activities, then seems to be you have broken micro-switch at PCB
if the device is under warranty you can claim this malfunction
if the device is over warranty period, there is just one way:
- remove the switch from PCB
- order new one, cost of such micro-switch is about 20 cents
- replace the new

CAUTION:
- this micro-switch replacement is useful for soldiering skilled person
- when you don't have such skills, try to find professional help

Even without pressing the button!

Seems clearly that reset switch is dead...

I just bought the device through Amazon Warehouse some days ago.
They asked me to send them back for refund.
I'm looking with Synology for a repair or replace instead.

Best regards

right, dead micro-switch follow the logs

Reason is written by you - cheap purchase from the Amazon Warehouse.

Amazon Warehouse Deals is a part of Amazon.com that specializes in offering deep discounts on returned, warehouse-damaged, used, or refurbished products that are in good condition but do not meet Amazon.com’s rigorous standards as “new.”
This is too dangerous approach how to purchase a device which have to save your valuable data.

Real and possible reason:
Someone (previous owner of then NAS) pushed the Reset micro-switch more than necessary and such damaged device was bought by you.

Hi all,

I found this post after fighting with numerous loosing configuration of my DS416. I'm over the warranty period (5,5 years) and after some emails with the support, I decided to remove the micro-switch reset button from MB.

@jeyare
I can find a lot of different micro-switch over here (Belgium) but none are close to the one I need in termes of size. Before buying a new one that can be closest as possible to the old one do you have any micro-switch item reference you can share? a web site where you find yours?

Thx

It depends on the PCB configuration. Use calliper for a precise measure of the existing switch, then you need:
- single pole tactile microswitch
- 99.999% it’s a side version of the switch
- you have to measure the length, width, and depth of the pressed button (the black one part, attached picture below) … base of your google search for the switch source

This picture is just for a better understanding of written information - this isn’t the exact measured output:

Just want to add I was having a similar issue with a DS918+ that was ~4 years old. Machine would reboot 1-4 days with the logs saying the REST button was preset and eventually it would reset the Admin account.

Instead of adding a new Rest button I just pulled the old one off the Motherboard with pliers. Worked like a charm and it was EASY to just pull it off. Machine no longer reboots. I can no longer reset the device manually anymore...unless I solder in a new switch but I can live with that.

It's really upsetting Synology doesn't offer to fix the issues as it's a minor fix and clearly people are having an issue with the switch. Customer Service response was it's out of warrenty ..buy a 920. Which means that $500 NAS only lasted 3.7 years! I would've paid to have it fixed if the cost was resonable.

Hi - thanks for supplying this info. My long running (without issue) DS412+ developed the same random resetting itself issue recently and while thankfully I didn't lose any data, I did have to go through and reinstall a few times. I couldn't see any reason for this to happen (no changes etc.) and reckoned I was looking at changing the unit - that it must be failing. I didn't want to have to buy just yet as I'd like to wait and see about the next one to come out (DS922+) if I can. Anyway, after the 3rd rebuild in a month, I found this link and removed the Reset button. I don't think I will look to replace it as the effort involved and the risk of causing different issues (if I'm clumsy) would be a concern. I've had no resets since (about 2 months now) so it looks like it was the same issue. Strange thing to have a problem with but glad it seems to be sorted.

I am curious...did Amazon offer any return policy with that purchase? if so, I would have returned it.
