I was disappointed to discover, at the moment I intended to use the feature, that secure erase is not available for hard drives connected by USB. DSM only offers file system-level access to external media. In principle, one might imagine working around the design limitations in DSM if a VM were able to access a USB device as a passthrough. However, no such feature is among the very limited feature set of the VM Manager add-on.

Am I missing any possible method to complete a secure erase on a drive connected by USB to a DiskStation?

I would not trust secure erase, without a visual surface check of the entire drive. There is no documentation, nor evidence, that this feature provides full erasure. Be careful and verify secure erasures.
