Hi everyone, I am trying to create a simple network consisting of Synology Network Attached storage (NAS), TP-link POE switch and UAP HD and it wont have access to the internet. I have activated the DHCP server on the NAS and assigned An IP address for the access point. To configure the AP. I have already a unifi controller installed on my macbook managing another network. I connected my macbook to the network via ethernet cable to the switch. Then i created a new site on my controller and and adopted the AP to it. The AP has the assigned IP that i chose for it on the NAS so I confirmed that the DHCP server on my NAS is working. Then I created a new wireless network for this site. I checked using another device that the WAN is working and I connected to it and i was able to access the NAS files. Afterward, I disconnected my macbook cable from the switch. At this point an issue starts. I was not able to connect to the AP via Wifi. i tried to connect via several devices but with no luck. I connected my macbook to the switch and the wifi started to work normally!!!
I tried my best but could not solve it. Does anyone have experience with connecting unifi AP to synology NAS.

looking forward for your reply

pls be more specific, because I'm lost:
- the "New" site is kind of corporate or Vlan? What kind of subnet?
- what specific TP-link switch? Model name/number?
- "WAN" did you mean "Wireless network"? Note, WAN is acronym for wide area network = outside from your LAN (Internet).

Use paper and pencil write there existing LAN architecture (devices & IP addresses) and then make a photo, then send the photo here

Thanks Jeyare for your reply.

will am not a very technical guy but i will try my best to explain.
I following image explains how i created the new site on unifi controller

To make long story short these are the local network components:-

1- Synology NAS DS1819+
2- TP-Link POE Switch (TL-SG108PE)
3- Unifi UAP HD

• NAS will be the DHCP server
• Unifi controller installed on my MacBook

I meant by WAN wireless network (my bad)

The issue is:- if I disconnect my Macbook (which has the unifi controller installed on) from the switch, no device can join the wireless network.

Your wording:
"I am trying to create a simple network consisting of Synology Network Attached storage (NAS), TP-link POE switch and UAP HD and it wont have access to the internet. "

then you have just 4 network appliances:
1- Synology NAS DS1819+
2- TP-Link POE Switch (TL-SG108PE)
3- Unifi UAP HD
4 - unknown router - a device from your internet provider (or purchased by you)

and your last wording explained all your troubles with the WiFi.

---

How to:
1. You can delete the last site created for the AP. Stay with the default site only (you can rename it). You don't need two sites for your local network (LAN). Sites you need in case when you have your home network (default) and next house network (e.g. 1000km from your home network).

2. Because UNIFI technology is based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) platform - all devices controlled from a single interface - you need Unifi Controller running e.g. for your WiFi HotSpot (and for rest of smart services). You can purchase Unifi Cloud Key (small HW box with the controller) or when you have a NAS, in your case great DS1819+ you can install the Unifi controller into NAS. Here is a gude, how to. You will get independent controller operation from your Mac.

3. Next setup is dependent from your Router - just to be sure: do you have Unifi router or another brand?
send me the router brand/model

For this scenario you need just setup:
- single corporate LAN
- AP connected to the corporate LAN
- then you can define a restrictions for guest based on Unifi WiFi HotSpot portal (internet only, ....)
Done.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Regarding point 3: no i am not using any router From any brand i thought it is not necessary since the network dont have internet connection.

Do you think not having a router is causing the issue?

and thank you for the unifi controller NAS installation guide. it is a great idea to install the controller on the NAS

Thank you very much. installing the Unifi controller on the NAS using docker completely solved the issue. it seems that the access point needs the controller to be always connected.
