Hello everyone,

I have a strange issue when I access remotely my DS412+ located in my house through HTTPS with Safari or Webdav with Infuse. For weeks everything was fine but since last week the speeds are around 3mbps when I am connected remotely through the WIFI in my apartment (300km from my house).

  • In local the speed is very fast. The NAS is directly connected to the router in ethernet and I have 300mbps up and down.
  • In 4G with my phone the speed is quite fast (30mbps)
  • With my WIFI in my apartment (300km from the NAS), the speeds are around 3mbps.
  • I tried to use a VPN with the internet connection of my WIFI and it's also very slow.

There's no differences in speeds if I access my NAS through HTTPS or Webdav.
If I do a speed test when I am connected with my WIFI I get around 400mpbs. Everything else run just fine.

Anyone have any ideas about what is happening?

Thanks!

I think it's the most plausible explanation.
But if that's the case, why is it not faster when I use a VPN?
And when I upload files on my NAS the speed is very fast. It's only when I download files that the speed is slow.

ok what’s the up/down internet speed on the nas location?

ok so 300 would be a max here in ideal situation (not over vpn, well maybe over Wireguard).

Are you able to test it with a different device?
Yes I tried with my Mac, my iPhone and my Apple TV. Same results.
And if I am connected to my NAS with OpenVPN from my remote location, Speedtest.net results are 60mbps up and down.

Ok so back to protocol. Would it be an option to try and use sftp for example once you have the vpn connection active? Just to try and see the results

Unfortunately since this morning I can't access my nas at all
I think I will be able to regain access to it late tonight or tomorrow because there's no one at the nas location for the moment.
Thank you a lot for your time and I will try sftp when I regain access to my nas!

I tried to do that and it's the same exact speed than when I am using Webdav or Safari without using a VPN.

I’ve read through the thread and I know you said it was working and now it is, in effect, throttled, but how do you connect? Direct to Internet IP or personal domain, QuickConnect direct, QuickConnect relay, another? Could something have hanged to force a rerouting via slower mechanism? Are you using exactly the same connection address from all test locations?

Has something changed? This seems like a ‘no’ but we have had long threads where this was asked only on page three for the answer to change from an emphatic ‘no’ to ‘I did switch routers’ and it was the router. Could it be some change at one of the ISPs? Or traffic control setting? Or firewall geolocation mis-configuration? Or access policy on login portals/reverse proxies/virtual hosts? Or something I just thought but have forgotten (age, huh!)?

The router hardware… it’s not trying to do a lot of stuff and is now struggling?

I connect to my nas with webdav using the domain name (xxx.synology.me) with infuse and with safari using https://xxx.synology.me:xxxx.
I tried with openvpn and sftp with Cyberduck and it's the same. (500KBps down and 4MBps up).
When I use the 4g of my phone the speed is 2MBps up and down with openvpn + sftp.

It must be coming from either my router or my internet provider no?

And havent changer my ISPs, I changed my router 2 months ago before even configuring my server. I tried 3 days ago to put the old router back and it was the same.

You use the HTTPS and synology DDNS remotely and also locally, so there’s a loop back in the NAS’s local router?

Does your remote NAS location‘s IPS have any fair use policy? Could they be throttling the connection.

Do you use the same ISP in both locations? There’s no bad blood between different ISP and throttling connections one to the other? That shouldn’t happen but you never know.

‘the same’ meaning that the old router doesn’t change the current situation of slow speeds, not that it reverted to how it used to be with that router.

I don't know. I use HTTPS with the domain name without using the VPN and SFTP with the local ip address when using Openvpn. The speeds are very similar.

I am in France. I use Orange where the nas is and SFR where I am. I contacted SFR and they were not very competent so I don't know it they throttle the connection.

Has this ever been figured out or resolved?

Yes, sorry for not responding.

After multiple calls with my internet provider they said it was because of incompatibilities between ipv4 and ipv6.
They said they turned off IPV6 directly from their side. The process took 24 hours and now everything works.

Thanks everyone for helping me!
