Setting up a mesh wifi configuration with Synology router lineup. The question is can an old model still serve it’s purpose, or is it just an old dinosaur in a modern age?

Synology only recently started to sell and develop network devices, specificity routers. To date there are 3 models that are out there. RT1900AC, RT2600AC and MR2200AC. All of the models support the latest version of SRM (Synology Router Manager) that’s a clear fork of Synology’s popular NAS OS, DSM.

Aimed at beginners and medium skilled users, setting up these routers is a piece of cake. To make things clear, there are some advanced features that really only a handful of users will ever use, but on the other hand its not even close to some solutions out there that can do much much more in terms of network configuration.

Today I would just like to focus on a question, that most people that are considering creating a mesh network, might wonder. How does it work, and is it worth it?

The part about reusing the RT1900ac in your basement...

Since there is no coverage of the main WiFi signal down there then you could use the same SSID for this access point. If you used RADIUS authentication throughout your WiFi (WPAn Enterprise) then you could also maintain passwords in sync.

Before adding the MR2200ac to create my mesh I did play with running the old Airport Extreme on the same SSID as the RT2600ac, even where there was overlap of reception. It generally worked in that for low device volumes there was no noticeable degradation even though this is very much non-ideal. With it being two separate WiFi controllers there was no smart switching but due to the physical locations of the two they generally switched over while going up/down the stairs.

The mesh is much better :)
