When your disk passed away and:
- it's "just" Hot spare disk in your second backup instance
- and the disk is one of your oldest disk in operation (10y old) in (my) oldest NAS (10y old DS1511+) ... for me as second backup instance for 3-2-1 scheme

then it doesn't matter if the disk is from WD, Seagate, HDS, ....

Perfect! 🍻 RIP

Btw: WD Caviar Black
Date of Manufacture: 04 DEC 2010

still 2 same WD Caviar disks are running in this machine (same age), include 2 youngest Seagate NAS (4/2013), from the first Seagate NAS range.
Then my recommendation is still valid, don't waste your investments into s.ity low-cost disks. There is still better choice to purchase a drive designed to handle NAS workload and operational requirements with their NAS specialized firmware.
Or don't hesitate to calculate your data spending for 4-5Y, when you need to know what disk space you need.

Some experiences from actual disk replace:
1. When you will use as "new disk" disk used in Win8-10 as system disk before, NAS can't recognize such disk.
2. You need delete all partitions before
3. When you have Linux OS, it's simple with Gnome
4. When you have Win OS only you can't do this easy by Computer management/Disk management
then investment into external SATA III/USB 3 data cable is must for common NAS/Disk maintenance
