Tutorial Enabling mobile push notifications

A simple yet powerful feature that one might miss!

For this to work, you must install Synology's DS Finder on your mobile device (available for iOS and Android).

While you're on your LAN launch DS Finder on your mobile and let it find your DiskStation, login to it and turn on Push notification option. Stay logged in.

Now login to DSM on your desktop or laptop (using an admin account) and do the following:

1. Go to control panel.
2. Open Notification (under the system section).
3. Select Push service tab.
4. Tick “Enable mobile device notifications”.

The options to “Manage paired devices” and “Send a test message” are not clickable at this point.
Click Apply and they should become available.

Now click on “Manage paired devices" and you should find your device there. If not, click "Refresh" and it should appear.

You're all set. You can try "Send a test message".
Now you can logout on DS Finder on your mobile and close it.

I like this feature so much. The notifications are almost instantaneous. I like it even more when I use keywords to trigger notifications. This makes it really powerful. For this, see the other resource, "Push notifications with a twist".

Notes:
  • Of course, for push notifications to work, your DiskStation must have access to the internet.
  • On the latest versions of DS Finder, you can enable a pass code for the app.
