I bought my first NAS the DS920+ and am worried about getting locked into Synology. Couple questions:
If my NAS crashes 10 years down the road - not the drives but if the controller hardware fried itself - would I need another Synology NAS to recover my data? Can I buy a non-Synology NAS...

I have a Plex system (Plex Media Server for serving the media, and Plex for Windows for viewing the media) operating on my Windows 10 PC. All the media is stored on two different Synology systems (a 218+ and 220+). I want to install Plex on my other Synology, a 1520+. How do I...
I've a DS218 with two disks (RAID1) and a new DS220+.
What I want is to migrate to btrfs with no data loose and no new disks, is it possible?
Process I thought:
1) Remove disk1 from old NAS
2) Insert disk1 to new NAS
3) Start DSM from scratch formating all data.
4) Create a new volume...
I have a DS1515+ with a current 3x6TB disk in SHR (RAID5), giving me 12 TB mounted on /volume1
I'm going to install 2x18 TB disks in SHR (RAID1), giving me a new 18 TB volume, and I want to get rid of the old 3x6TB disks.
I understand that there's no migration path from RAID5 on small disks to...
What I have: 3 x 6TB SHR Volume with 12 TB redundant storage (1 disk recently broken)
What I want: 2 x 18TB SHR volume with 18 TB redundant storage (I'll expand the volume after the migration)
Of course, I want to keep my volume and migrate everything, to avoid any additional work and downtime...
As the subject line suggests, I want to migrate a lot of data from the DS918+ to the DS1621xs+. On the surface this seems like a simple, albeit, time consuming task.... but I'm loosing data.
The file structure of the DS918+ was not optimal, When the DS1621xs+ was put in service, we attempted...
I just bought a used DS415+ to replace my DS409. The plan was to just move the HDDs over to the new enclosure and let it set itself up. Now I have read the articles from Synology on migration and my former assumption doesn't seam so straight forward any more.
What is your advice?
I am moving from DS918+ 4x4TB to DS1520+ 3x6TB.
I have migrated the 4TB drives to the new NAS. The 6TB drives are being delivered in a few days.
I think that the way to do this is to insert a 6TB in the 5th slot of the 1520+ and create a single disk SHR.
Then move the shares (or copy?) to the...
I have a functioning DS413j loaded with (4) 4TB Seagate HDDs in a Synology Hybrid RAID configuration. About 7TB out of 10.9TB total capacity is being used. Is there any way to migrate the HDDs to a new DS920+ without data loss? What will happen if I just move the HDDs to the new unit? Is there...
Good morning everyone,
I hope you guys can help me with the following challenge.
I want to replace my DS916+ with the DS920+ and hope to do it smoothly and without problems.
The DS916+ has 1 volume (storagepool1 in SHR, 2TB) and on it runs, among other things:
- VMM (vm's debian for docker and...
Hello, i have a synology ds216+ with 2 8tb Disks ext4
i recently bought a ds920 and 1 more 16tb disk

Hello, all. First post so forgive me if I either go into too much detail or too little.
I was the victim of bad pre-purchase instructions from a tech at Synology.
I have a Drobo 5c with 5 drives. 14TB, 14TB, 12TB, 10TB, 10TB.
I wanted a Synology DS1520+ (which I bought) and it was suggested by...
Apologies if this has been posted else where but I have checked.
Volume 1 - 2 x 10TB EXT4
Volume 2 - 2 x 10TB BTRFS
I have migrated ALL shares from V1 to V2.
How would I migrate all services (apps, logs, OS, BOOT etc) to V2 so I can delete V1 and eventually merge...
