My NAS has two slots, each currently occupied by a 2TB HDD drive, mirrored. RAID SHR. I am running out of space and would like to replace both drives with bigger ones. How do I do that?

1. Replace one drive, copy data from the remaining drive to the new one, then replace the other and repeat? How would that work?
2. Back everything up on another drive, insert two brand new drives, then restore the backup?
3?...

As you may have noticed, I am not your expert user, so I need the most idiot-proof solution to my problem. 😁

I did that on a 215J under 6.2..
went from 2x 2TB to 2x 4TB..

Shut down Swapped one drive with new, let it repair.
When done shut down, swap 2nd Drive. Repair, then expand to use entire space

Makes sense once you do it!
My Son in law is still using the 215J under 6.2

The described situation relates to any number of drives when configured in a RAID scenario that has one or more redundant drives (so not RAID 0 or JBOD). You describe your two drives being in SHR, just check that Storage Manager says something like this…

This is my main NAS storage pool 1, SHR-1 of four drives. Same message on my other NAS which is a two bay DS218+, SHR-1 of two drives.

Backing up the NAS beforehand would be a wise move, in case of any mishaps.

Be sure the 2x8 TB drives are present and selected along with the 16 TB drives, when first creating the pool.
