In this article, we'll try to cover the most popular backup solutions and ways to do it. For general backup discussion please open a new thread here.
1. Desktop backups
These apps will help you make backups of all your desktop devices such as Windows, Linux, and macOS devices. Tools in this category will be supported on all devices in the Synology lineup, but Active Backup ones will be only accessible to devices in the ‘+’ lineup.
2. Mobile backups
Some apps in this category are familiar and accessible in other ones as well, but you will have versions of these apps in all the major app stores on all major mobile platforms.
3. NAS backups
Unlike apps in the previous categories that backup your devices, these apps are used to backup your NAS data to another NAS, cloud service, or a spare USB that you might have laying around. Note that some apps in this category are exclusive to specific models and lineup so if you want to use them all, be sure to again check Synology’s ‘+‘ models.
4. Sync (desktop, mobile, NAS)
Syncing is very common nowadays so with these apps you will have the option to sync data to most major cloud destinations and turn your NAS into your private ‘Dropbox’ alternative.
5. Cloud backup
Apps in this category range from being accessible to entry range NAS models all the way to high-end ones. As before, be sure to check if the app is supported on your model or the model you plan on using. Apps are used to backup your SaaS or PaaS platforms such as O365/M365 as well as Google Workspace. Also, you can use them in scenarios when you want to again protect your NAS data by backing it up to the cloud or another remote NAS.
