Active backup restore error

Hi,

I have been searching google and talking to synology help did not yield a result.

WHen i restore using synology active backup, I will encounter the problem of a blue screen with the error "inaccessible boot device"

Can I ask.

1) can restore be done on a completely different computer ?
2) is this partition problem? what can I do?

THanks

It will depend on a number of things. If the backup is correct, you can restore it to another bare-metal computer (and it should work).

Another option (if you need data access for that machine) is to use the ABB Portal to get to the file level and restore what you need.

Finally, you can use ABB UI to restore this backup as a VM inside your VMM app and try and get it running that way. This might be a good way to test out if the backup is corrupt or if it's working as intended.

Thank you for the reply.

Not really sure what went wrong. I assume backup is correct as its "automated" and so is restore. I read some where that if the target computer's harddisk is not the same (i.e. smaller/larger), i face this problem.

Its as if the disk is "locked"

in regards to VM, im unfamiliar doing it and may need some time to explore.

This was a problem before ABB v2.2 but it is sorted now.

So you are restoring using a bare-metal restore option (via USB or ISO)?

Simply open up the ABB console select the machine that is backed up, and click the Restore button. Then in the wizard select the last option (you need to have VMM installed and configured on your NAS) and follow it to the end.

NOTE: you will need to have that machine classified as a "server" not a "pc" category to make this work. If its a pc atm you can use ABB ui to change its type to server.

Hi,

Thank you for this,

I am doing bare metal restore using USB.

Ill also give the VM a shot

Man. this is terrible.

my virtual machine (ds220+) doesnt have enough memory.

=/
You could run a virtual setup on your PC (not sure if you are on win or mac) and run a VM there, and try and boot with that usb stick and then pull the restore off your ABB (NAS). That's also a method that works. That is also an example of running an ABB backup on a different "bare-metal" device.
