Hello Everyone,

I need a piece of advice. I am not sure what is wrong but maybe you can help me.

I used to have(still do but upgraded her) 4th Gen TimeCapsule as my router at home. With 920+ I thought it was time to upgrade the router so I went with Asus AC88U because it is faster and offers LAN port aggregation.

The router is 5GHz (1733) and my MBP16 ticking at 1300.

The LAN ports are properly bound on router and on NAS. NAS is showing 2000 under network and single IP on the router as well.

The issue is as following - around the data transfer speeds

SMB/AFP - 50-60MB/s

TCP (Synology Drive) - 70-90MB/s

HTTPS (File Station) - 12MB/s

Router is connected to modem, and NAS is connected to LAN1/2 ports as it should be. TimeCapusule as an HDD is connected to LAN7 and IPTV LAN8. Router WAN to Modem.

I am puzzled why is the HTTPS over FileStation capping out at 12MB/s. What am I missing?

With TimeCapsule and 450Mbit network I was getting 40MB/s. (across all use cases)

Thanks,

Max

URL is - https://nas920.local/
I tried connecting to the Drive application directly and it is the same thing.

But for the routing part - I’m not sure.

How can I check this?

(Didn’t mention before) I connect to the router over Wifi and distance to router is about 2m. All tested speeds were over WiFi.

Good question. I will try when I get home.

Before I manage to test it out may I ask what would be the variants:
If not the same over wired?
Or if same occuover Wired connection?

Thx

I would expect that it should be the same (maybe a bit faster) considering that other tests are also via wifi and speeds a much higher.

Well update via a web browser over https is not the same as running the test over SMB for example so that's the difference right there. But I do agree that the speed is much lower.

You could also test upload via browser using the IP address of the nas (over http) and not its local name. Also, try with a different browser.

I tested over the cable but can’t remember the speed.
I will try connecting the cable and pushing the upload via https.

also will try direct IP for upload over wifi when I get home.

also - I am not sure how to force http connection as even when I turn off all https options I can think off on the NAS it still shifts to https. My networking knowledge is mediocre and while I do know some stuff, there is a lot of blanks to fill in.

thx for your advices so far,
Max

There is a check box that forces http to https but you will have to disable that and then simply use
Code:
http://yournasIP:port
(default one is 5000 for http).

I tried that but I may be missing something. I did change the regular port for myself so I will redo the steps back home and update the thread when I complete what we have outlined here.

cheers!

Ok this is the update.

When turning off automatic switch to https and using http://yournasIP:port the speed goes to 60-70MB/s over Wifi. good that it is on the same level as other wired connections albeit slower compared to TCP which gets close to 90MB/s.
That is very good and I am ready to settle with it.

I have disabled Network -> DSM -> DSM Ports -> Unticked Automatically redirect http to https and under custom domain I have unticked - Use HSTS (to force browsers to use secure connections)

But is there a way of using my customised domain with http: ?
(I tried this - Synology Community)
When I do use it - address can not be resolved and on a normal connection (nas.local) it turns to HTTPS automatically.

Also more importantly: why would there be such a crazy difference between http and https speeds?

I have tried enabling and disabling use HTTP compression the transfer speed over HTTPS stays locked @12MB/s

🤷‍♀️

Do you have any idea why would https be so much woefully slower compared to http?

Or where to start looking?

well, encrypted transfers are slower by default, but why in your case that much... I really am not sure what to tell you about that.
