Look here:

I will prepare some deep outcomes based on historical BB stats.

Some interesting points:
- they don’t have SAS drives in their storage farm
- no WD drives (except HGST)
- no top enterprise level drives in major share
- just spindle mentioned

24M rows and almost 8GB of data sets from Backblaze for 1Q+2Q/2020:
- missing date of purchase and date of first usage
- missing of RAID grouping
then no possible to measure of reliability for another use cases
still thinking about some outcomes

I'm focused on several "critical" SMART indicators from the BB dataset:

[5] Reallocated Sectors Count .... Barracuda and Seagate Hybrid HDD lines worst
[10] Spin Retry Count ... it was worst domain for Hitachi HDDs
[187] Reported Uncorrectable Errors
[188] Command Timeout ....confirmed that Barracuda HDD is absolutely out of reliable NAS operation
[192] Power-off Retract Count ....confirmed that Barracuda HDD is absolutely out of reliable NAS operation
[197] Current Pending Sector Count .... Toshiba HDD busted
[198] Uncorrectable Sector Count ... again Barracuda is worst in this measurement

and some "traps" for the operation conditions:

[4] Start/Stop Count ..... worst HDD --- WD Blue --- PN: WDC wd5000lpvx === AVG 891/day !!!!
[174] Unexpected Power Loss Count ....... all used Seagate Barracuda SSD contains this SMART measurements (e.g. 250GB 132x per first half of 2020) ???
[194] Temperature Celsius (see below)

Max Operation Temperature (C) for SSDs by SMART (Median range 34-39C):

MAX Temp (C) for HDDs (Median range 27-29C):

I would like to go deep dive, but as was written, there are missing age and workload data for each SN , then no possible to find relations between age/workload/errors/...
OFC: there is an operation time, but this isn't age of the disk drive.

but really interesting data publicized by Backbaze.com

There isn’t the association of leakage with years of operation. Then from this point of view no worries.

  • Question
What does the SMART report on the drives look like? Look for the Reallocated Sector count in particular.
