Which free sw can I use?
I tried Synology Drive Client but I am able to select only a directory to be backuped

Welcome

Are you talking about backing up some computer files/folders that will be saved on your NAS?
yes.
in my PC directory Documents there are files I want to back up periodically as well in some subdirectories, but not all files and not all directories.
Then of course I would like to set up periodicity of backup

Considering that Drive don’t not cover this scenario, from Synology side you are left only with Active Backup for Business (file server method). The problem is that ABB package works only on selected models. So if you can’t run ABB on your NAS then you will have to find a 3rd party solution for this scenario.

Or, you store all your office files on the nas on a mapped folder, and open/edit them directly from the nas.

You can then use hyper backup or cloud sync to backup to other machines or cloud.

I use SyncBack FREE edition for backing up files/folders from my PC to my NAS.
It boots with windows, sits in tray and respects rules and paths you select (time/date/overwrite/new-old/sync...). I use it for many years and never had problems. I'm backing up to multiple locations and NAS drives from my PC. FREE version has all the features I need so I never had need to look for Pro version but even Pro is not expensive, and it's perpetual licence if you need it...

You can download and try is that what you want..
