Basic NAS do?

Hi All, Im new here

I'm trying to work out what NAS to get, I believe I only need a basic one for a simple file server? But maybe I dont, so thought I would ask!

  • As we just use indesign, illustator and PDF files (we bring the bigger files to our desktops if need) will a basic 2 bay drive surface for 2 macs?
  • Will a NAS help with my saving permissions encountered using adobe aps on mac <> mac? as saving to a mac or pc on a network seems to have allsorts of inconsistent issues

Thanks for the time helping me out.

thanks for the reply! That model looks good.
For a basic file server, would this do, or am i going to have problems, - Synology Diskstation DS223J

My recommendation: stay away from the J types. Budget range, no memory expansion , low cpu, shorter support life.

Comparing the four two-bay DS...

The RAM is important and fixed [no upgrade] in the two lowest models. For DSM 7 (the current OS major version) the minimum RAM is advised to be 1 GB. Though older NAS that support DSM 7 with 512 MB do limp along. DSM is a web-based interface and having more RAM does help, both just to get logged in but also some of the packages need more.

So a very basic SMB file server can be run on the DS223j. Network services that run headless are generally ok, but it's when you start to use the web interface and Synology's media and office packages that you'll experience the impact of lower RAM. So maybe the value range DS223 would be better with 2 GB RAM?

Personally, and from experience, a plus range is the better starting point. Why? Because you may find out all these other interesting packages and try using them... Synology Drive as a Dropbox like private cloud, or Synology Photos, etc. These really benefit from better CPU and more RAM. The higher two two-bay NAS have expandable RAM. They also have two 1 GbE LAN ports which can be used to bond together using link aggregation.

The DS723+ also has two bays for NVMe.2 bays for caching.

Agree. Also consider your short and long term storage needs (3-5 years), and make sure to purchase NAS or Enterprise rated drives. Read reviews when deciding brand and model.

Start with plus system and ram expansion that puts you in a great starting point for years to come.

I owned a 215J

I gave it away.
