We are replacing a SME server with a Synology box. Both are using a version of AD using Samba. The notion is to copy data directories from the SME server to the Synology box then unjoin the workstations (W10/64 pro) from the SME AD server and remove the SME server from the network. At that point we would install Synology Directory Server on the Synology box and rejoin the workstations to the domain.
Right now we are in testing using images of machines on an isolated network to be sure the transition goes as expected.
As you can see above this has not been successful. Both images are from the same workstation. Since the error message mentioned "existing computer" I changed the name from off3 to xyz, rebooted and tried again. As you can see the error message is the same except for the machine name. Looks to me the error message is misleading at best. One can name the machine anything and since the Synology box has not seen any workstation names yet the error persists. My best guess is this is a problem on the Windows boxes.
The only place the domain name can be found in the registry is this key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters\{A25C90EF-F11B-44B3-940C-DFF4A4E02CB1}
Removing the entry mentioning the domain/workgroup name does not change the error.
Additionally workstations that have never joined the SME server as a domain computer can join the Synology domain without error and work as expected.
Any ideas?
