Yes, another newbie here with the most basic of questions (and knowledge).

I have been using a WD Red 8TB HDD in a Volans USB HDD enclosure as an external data drive for a few months and decided to move to a “proper” NAS arrangement.

I fitted my old WD Red 4TB HDD into Disk Bay 2 of my new Synology DS223 with the plan to move the 8TB HDD into Bay 1 as my primary data drive. I stumbled my way through the setup process, used Disk Manager (Administrator login) to create Storage Pool 1 and Volume 1 on the 4TB HDD. I accepted Disk Manager’s recommendations on all parameters.

Having successfully mapped a drive from Windows 11 I then used RoboMirror (GUI) to copy my data onto the NAS “drive”. It only took 33 hours to robocopy the 816GB 😊.

Thanks to a few posts by fredbert & Simcc I am starting to understand Synolgy’s directory structures (home, homes) and account & security requirements.

I then fitted the 8TB HDD into Drive Bay 1 and (nervously) created Storage Pool 2, Volume 2. See blow.

I want to keep the drives/pools/volumes as separate storage locations, using one as a backup.

Now, to my question; When I map a Windows drive, under an Administrator login, I can only see the 4TB Pool/Volume (home / homes).

Any suggestions on how do to make the 8TB drive visible under Windows?

Welcome, and some good steps you made already.
Not sure on your setup, but mapping on a synology is not done one volume level but on shared folder level.
So best to find out if you created a shared folder on the 8TB.
Once that is ready, including the permissions, you can setup the share in Windows.

Thanks EAZ1964, that makes two of us who are not sure on my setup :).

You were, however, able to identify my issue; I had not taken that last step of creating the shared folder.

Solved and now mapped, with many thanks.

Exactly, that's why I set up my backup NAS this way and my backups are incremental.

You can add the new drive and change the RAID type to RAID1 (which is what SHR is in a 2 drive array).
