I'm currently using Cloud Sync to backup some photo directories on my DS218+ to my Google Drive. Been using Cloud Sync for this purpose for a while and it is working as expected.

I don't need access to the backed up files other than what I have now, from my Google Drive, from my NAS.

Is there any reason why I would want to move to Drive for this function? My bias is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But if Drive was more reliable, or "better" in some significant way, or if Synology has hinted they will retire Cloud Sync, I would consider look into it.

Thanks.

Ah, I had thought I read that Drive did that, maybe I've crossed up my info. If Drive doesn't support public clouds like Google Drive, then my decision is made for me. :)

Thats possible. Synology Drive is the successor of the following packages:

- Cloud Station Server
- Cloud Station ShareSync

And of the Windows/Mac client software:
- Cloud Station Drive
- Cloud Station Backup

Looking at the names here, I can understand you can easily confuse that 'Cloud Sync' package is part of the group that will be implemented in Drive. But it's not.. :)

LOL...Man, someone needs to grab the marketing team and Synology and box their ears. ;-)

I worked for a company that started to name everything (products, apps, services, web sites) with a common name to tie them together, but in the end it started to get so confusing since everything had such similar names. Internally we'd get confused all the time, and the customers were just lost...

I had to check just to sure too :p

I was going to suggest Cloud Sync should be rename Public Cloud Sync, or some such thing, but then noticed they'd snuck in WebDAV at the every end of the list. Sure it could be a public cloud service but equally it's not necessarily a cloud service provider (unlike the other 21).

But still, since Drive already has a sync engine Synology could consider one day to incorporate the Cloud Sync functionalities into Drive. In that case, a public cloud would be 'just another' sync destination for Drive. Drive can already sync with phones, tablets, laptops and other NAS'es. But so far no hints I've seen that this will hapen.
