Intended usage is a home NAS. This is the first NAS I have set up, so there may be something simple I am missing.

Drives are two Synology HAT5300-8T configured as RAID 1.

DS220+ connected physically via router. DSM version 7.1-42661 Update 1

Synology QuickConnect says LAN1 Connection Status is connected.

The staus of both drives is "normal".

The volume is currently "optimizing in background" with 5 hours remaining.

Whenever I attempt to Connect to Server via the MacOS finder and enter the name and password I get the "Connection failed" error message.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Welcome! Good to have you with us!

While optimization is an intensive task it could be possible that it is utilizing your nas to a degree that is not responding the way it should.

Also if your have some services on top of that are doing some operations it could also be a factor.

Saying this, in my personal experience I have not had a similar situation but I do notice slowdowns when optimization kicks in ofc.

When you try to connect from mac I guess you are using a local ip address of the nas?

Also is this smb or afp connection?

Have you tried to connect via ssh (terminal app) to your nas and run htop? It will open a command line like system monitor so you can see if the cpu/ram is hitting its max but also what processes are utilizing the nas atm.

Thanks for your reply!
Optimization is finished, no other services running.
I am using the automatically assigned IP address, I assume local. (My ignorance is showing)
smb connection.
CPU utilization 3-4%, memory about 18%

Does this mean you can now log on without issues?

How exactly do you try to connect from finder?
Do you navigate to network and then to the shared folder?
or
menu
Go
Connect to server
type SMB://192.168.x.yy/Public

Have you set up any shares yet on the NAS?
OK, now my ignorance is really showing! I've been in the mindset of a simple external drive.
I set up a shared folder and voila, connect!

Tip: Once you have connected to a share (via Finder | Go | Connect to server... etc), you can drag and drop the top level of the share (the drive symbol) onto the Favourites bar on the left side of Finder.
This will create a permanent shortcut to the share to save you having to do the Go | Connect to server... routine every time. You can connect to and disconnect from ('eject') shares from here just like it's an external drive.

You can create shortcuts in this way for all your shares on the NAS.
