In conversation a couple weeks ago:
Was asked: “ If Synology specifies their drives, why not use them?”

My Answer:

“I have 30+ Year history with Seagate. — Synology has 30+ Week history making drives”.

Conversation abruptly changed!

The mechanical workings of a hard drive are well know and basically every HDD works the same way, it's the firmware that is crucial and that's the part Synology is having a hand in . So I think the point is relevant.

Ofc I agree, but then again Syno also works with appliances that run all sorts of drives for over 20y. Not really an underdog in the business. Trying to further drive their business towards a more controlled solution for a customer is again, open for debate.

No I disagree... after years of conversations with Seagate Support through work (and occasionally at home), I never had any trepidation about any upcoming conversation or contact.. (Usually Warranty calls, but did discuss some firmware and feature request issues a couple times at request of employer or other MFG (at times we ran Beta mods prior to Product release) that used Seagate products.)
Re-branding someone else's drives with custom firmware is prone to more issues than 'in-house' from beginning to end manufacture... Subsequent issues invite a 'pissing contest' to find the cause of issues.... I've seen it with Synology Software and other people's software packages NOW.... Am I to think it won't happen with hardware?
Any Broadcaster's here with history of Abekas product's? Great Hardware, Great Product Idea, Literally: Emmy Award Winning Design!, with Modified Driives.... from one MFG. You don't recall Abekas? Drive mods had problems. Company non-existant now...
Look at some of the last few years firmware on products Synology has made for some time.... They are writing custom fimware for someone else's drives? I smell an upcoming 'Contest'! All the above is Before Warranty conversations...

No... At the time I spoke my true feelings... I'll re-visit them in a few years: Things may change, but considering Synology Drives at the present makes me feel Exactly what I said in the first Post..
