I'm seeing an issue today whereby the DDNS settings on the DS918+ are blank (instead of the external IP being shown) and the NAS is reporting there is no external connectivity. On checking the Synology account for the connection that reports all is normal.

I've rebooted the NAS and it looking at the Synology account it now shows that DDNS is offline. Hostname and IP blanked out...

Any ideas folks?

It's been up and down all night so alas not fixed. They've asked me to check all the usual settings and all are fine.

I can't see that as the router is not reporting any issues with lack of connectivity and if I log into the Synology account when the problem occurs it shows the DDNS service is offline.

The rest of the network (shares / Apple systems / Homekiy devices etc) all show as online with no issues when the DDNS issues occur.

I'm using CloudFlare on the router for DNS: 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 which should not cause any issues? I do not want to use my ISPs DNS or Google......

I use CF as well. Based on this, I would say there is some sort of problem on the device handling ddns connectivity towards the outside.

any specific firewalls maybe?

Nothing at all. The setting are exactly the same as they have been since setting up the NAS / remote connectivity. Nothing has changed at all anywhere on the router, on the NAS etc. The forum (etc) have been online since March with no issues at all. The problem occurred a few days ago and it seems to be up / down ever since.

I've changed the DNS settings (in the router) to Google and back to Cloudflare which has changed the external IP of the NAS. I've checked in the Synology account / DDNS remote settings and both have changed and match so all is looking fine as settings go. Will see how it goes from here.

Well it didn't help. The DDNS has been up and down on a regular basis. Synology came back and said it's either a faulty ethernet cable or my ISP going down. When I pointed out that the NAS can be acessed on the LAN with no issues and the internet is not down when I have the issues they've now thrown it back to the Taiwan developers.

In the interim I've set up a No-IP.COM account and when the problem next occurs I'll see if that is affected. If that is fine then the problem has to be at their end.

FWIW, I have multiple DDNS accounts. I've used No-IP, but have grown weary of their renewal process every 3 weeks. I'm switching to Dynu, which, so far, as no re-registration nags.

From a security standpoint, I find the Synology DDNS somewhat undesirable, as it is a known target for NAS/router for the countless script kiddies banging around the 'net. Of course then the LE certification, and the use of wildcards, becomes less easy.

Well No-IP is in place as a test at the moment. I'll take a look at Dynu and see how that works. Hmm looks like they are not supported in the NAS Remote Access Settings?

So how does switching away from using Synology DDNS affect the LE certification?

Thanks that is appreciated. Am I correct in saying you need to have the domain hosted with them for it to work?

I'm unsure what you are asking. An IP Updater can run on any device in your LAN. For example, any NAS, PC or your router.

Or did I misunderstand your question?

I do have it working on the NAS but to get it to work I did have to enter a domain, but for that to resolve properly (from what I can see) the domain DNS records need to be in place with them?

I think the question is whether you have to transfer your domain to the DNS service provider, and the answer will be 'yes'.

I purchase and renew my few personal domains with my original domain provider, but the two I use for DDNS I have transferred them to Namcheap. All it took was to, on the domain provider's portal, change their main name servers to Namecheap's servers. This instructs all web look ups to use Namecheap's DNS for these two domains. Then I can setup the DDNS and other records for my domains.

It should be similar between your domain provider and your selected DDNS service provider.

Yep that is what I thought. Having trouble with my domain provider, they've moved on to a new 'improved' system where half the details on the domain can't be edited and TTL is 36400 and cant be changed. So looking to find a registrar who can handle .co.uk and .com domains. Not having. good day (week)....

My domains are from Fasthosts (had two bad experiences with Nominet members before this) and, as I said, use two of these domains with Namecheap. Think they do all the TLDs.

FYI, I use .uk domains with Namecheap. TTL is low on the DDNS and can set various DDNS on subdomains too.

Only thing is Namecheap isn't in DSM/SRM DDNS supported services and I've never worked out how to get a custom provider to work. I use DNS-0-Matic (OpenDNS / Cisco) to act as go-between.

Interesting, the DDNS went down again, and on looking at all the services I've set up all of them have failed. So does this point to a network issue somehow as Synology have indicated?

Screenshot 2021-08-29 at 11.13.55.jpg

It's weird that the ethernet cable checks out as the NAS is connected to the network. The router has been rebooted, port forwarding is in place for ports:

NAS HTTP, HTTPS
NAS WebDAV HTTPS
NAS VPN
NAS UX
Plex

Interestingly enough I have also (now) set up the Netgear DDNS in the Orbi router and that reports no problems with the connection.

I've changed the ethernet cable (again) and also tried changing the ethernet port on the NAS, no difference. Changed where the NAS connects to on the network, via a switch or directly into the ethernet ports on the router. No difference.

Both my quick connect name and ddns.synology.com resolve fine with no issues. [Edit - the system came up while I was testing these, I'll check again when it goes down].

I've no idea if it has any bearing on the problem, but over the last few days the Orbi router has blocked 'exploit attacks' on the NAS from the following IP addresses:

122.237.107.155
52.48.143.196
106.13.90.51
219.154.217.207
178.94.183.152
61.242.40.69
104.152.52.38

I've advised all the above to Synology support.

No ideas where to go next.....

A thought could this be a firewall issue on the NAS? What sort of thing do you guys have set for protection?
