I'm seeing an issue today whereby the DDNS settings on the DS918+ are blank (instead of the external IP being shown) and the NAS is reporting there is no external connectivity. On checking the Synology account for the connection that reports all is normal.

I've rebooted the NAS and it looking at the Synology account it now shows that DDNS is offline. Hostname and IP blanked out...

Any ideas folks?

It's not good news alas. The Orbi is an RBK53S system. The NAS a DS918+ I went back to the v2.7.2.104 fimware. I was hoping the issue would be fixed but no it's hit me again tonight... completely gutted and no ideas where to go now.

While not exactly the same problem, the synology.me ddns was not updating. There used to be periodic entries in the log - perhaps twice a day, i think - when it reestablished. Then it just stopped. A reboot didn't help.

The only thing I could find was it was *apparently* updating its IPv4 address but the IPv6 address was simply blank in the DDNS tab. The network tab of Info Center did show the correct IPv6 address and it was reachable, just not registered with synology.me.

After I applied the 6.2.4... update 2 it started again updating its IP address.

I have no idea why it stopped working, why I couldn't get it working again, or what precisely (was update 2 just a coincidence?) fixed it.

Hmm that sounds very suspicious and makes me think my original concern that it was the DSM7 update that caused the issue after all.
However if I stop using the Orbi and go back to the BT Home Hub then the issue vanishes completely. With the Orbi online the problem was there after around an hour, switching to the Hoem Hub last night no issue so far in nearly 9 hours.
At a complete loss over this, it's driving me nuts!

Yeah. The one thing we have in common really is that part of the ddns tab was also blank for me. Did your log center show the periodic updates (registrations) with either of your routers?

No changes to routers here. Oh, I take it back. My ISP periodically pushes updates and I believe it received a pushed update a couple of weeks ago, so I may not be able to rule that out completely after all. Too many variables at play to draw a definitive conclusion, but I tend to think it was a bug on Synology's end based on the log entries no longer being present.

Indeed. The periodic registrations take place, mostly okay, but fail on occasion when I'm using the Orbi. With the ISP router no such issues at all.
Anyway I'm leaving the ISP router in place for the entire weekend if there are no DDNS / DNS issues it has to be the Orbi router.

My new router (Fritzbox) and my Orbi in AP mode fixed the problem for almost 24 hours....

Fingers crossed for you.

For me I factory reset this morning and manually configured it instead of loading up the prior settings. I also managed (just in case) to stop the new firmware from installing. So waiting and seeing how it goes.

So is your Fritzbox handling DNS, DHCP etc, with the Orbi's just being used for carrying the Mesh WiFi?

Good luck for you to!
Fritzbox is handling now all router functions. DHCP, DNS etc. Indeed Orbi just for Mesh. Till now also steady Wifi. This was a problem earlier on and on advise from Netgear i used Routermode for stability...

Interesting. I did mention the FRitzBoz to my good lady but she was not impressed with the idea / price. Which model did you actually buy?
My Wi-Fi was a bit problematical originally until I turned of daisy-chaining and then it was rock solid.

Anyway 3 hours with no issues, I might start to feel hopeful. I'll see what happens over the next 24 hours though.

I wish I / we had the funds......

It failed yet again tonight....... so back to the Home Hub...... nothing else I can do at my end now......... got to wait on Netgear Support I guess unless I can get the Orbi to work in AP mode with the Home Hub?

I am very happy with the Fritz!box 7583 (it is standard kit supplied by my internet service provider).
I have extended it with Fritz!Repeaters 1750 on each floor. It is absolutely rock solid and the mesh is working great.
Also use the IP phone functionality that saved me quite a bit of cost compared to the standard offer of the provider.
Very happy with the setup!

I do keep on hearing good things about Fritz!box systems. In 14 months' time we'll likely move from BT to Zen Internet and they use Fritz!box as their router. So we'll see how things go then.

At the moment the Orbi in AP mode is working okay. In that mode I lose the Armor protection but at least the WiFi is a lot more stable and the mesh works with the HH6.

With the Orbi working in Access Point mode it seems (so far) to give me a stable network but alas does remove the Netgear Armor protection system from the Orbi. So no more detection and auto-blocking of intrusive IP attacks etc.

Anyway I’ll stick in this position until Netgear release the next firmware version and I’ll then give it another try.

I do have to say part of me is still wondering if it is a Synology issue as the problem did only start with DSM7. So I’m wondering if DMS7 has a random DNS communication issue.

I guess we’ll never know.

@tekguru Been following this thread for the past few days. I'm in the same scenario as you.

I have a DS1019+ with a Netgear Orbi & Netgear Armor enabled. Issue started when I upgraded to DSM 7. I disabled Netgear Armor from monitoring the NAS but that didn't resolve the issue. It just keeps having DDNS issues. It HAS to be something with DSM 7 considering the issue didn't exist until that update.

Yep I'm pretty convinced it is some sort of weird conflict between DSM7 and the Orbi. The Orbi had been running flawlessly from December right until I did the DSM7 upgrade. Then the problems occurred.
Synology says it is the Orbi. Netgear say there should not be any problems with the Orbi and the latest firmware was issued to fix DDNS issues.

@dorsi did you raise a support ticket with Synology at all?

I wish there was somebody on here running DSM6 with an Orbi running the latest firmware who could state they have no problems at all.

@Seaprobe is it an Orbi you're using too?

I wish Synology would own up to the issue.

The old school IT in me says what changed before it broke. If after DSM 7 upgrade the problem started, I'd fault DSM and given the weirdness with all DSM "upgrades" lately wouldn't surprise me a bit. Proving it becomes the obvious challenge...

There of course is/are unofficial downgrade procedures to get back to DSM 6, but I'd be very hesitant not knowing what may break attempting to do so.

I've just sent this on to Synology Support:

Hi guys, good morning. I need to re-activate this ticket.

I've been talking to three other Synology users who also use Orbi routers.

All three of us had been using the Orbi models with our various NAS models with no problems at all with DSM6. When all of us upgraded to DSM7 we all started having the same issues. They see the same issue with DNS and DNS that I reported.

I've now turned my Orbi so it works in AP mode with my ISP modem/router, another has bought a Fritz!Box router for £300 to use with his Orbi, again in AP mode.

Working in AP mode I have lost half the functionality that I bought the Orbi for including the security monitoring etc.

So this is now telling all three of us that there is a problem with DSM7 and Netgear Orbi routers.

Incidentally, another guy had the same problem with DSM 6.2.4... but that ended up getting fixed when he applied update 2.

Again this points to a problem / conflict with DSM and Netgear products but originating in DSM updates.

I've been working closely with Netgear support engineers to check out their side of the system including trying prior firmware versions (which worked flawlessly back in December through to March) when I first got the Orbi and the DNS/DDNS issue remains.

Can you again please PLEASE raise this ticket to a higher level within Synology so it can be investigated fully?

I'm happy to run any RC versions of DSM7 (or go back to DSM6 if there is an official way to do so) if it helps fix the problem.

If you need remote access for a high-level engineer to access the NAS and test please advise.

Back to you guys.

P.S. I'll share this reply with the guys who are having the issue too and I'll encourage them to also raise support tickets.

If anyone does want to raise a support ticket with Synology (please do so) you can reference my ticket: #2884921

Not sure if it’ll make a difference or not, but what if you install vDSM 6 and try. The only thing is that it might suffer the same because it’ll go through the same network stack (on DSM 7). But I’d try it if I were you.
