Scalable NAS with SSD cache acceleration capability
Synology DiskStation DS1520+ is an ideal network-attached storage solution suitable for small office and IT enthusiasts. Two built-in M.2 SSD slots and Synology SSD Cache technology allow you to boost system I/O and application performance. The scalable storage design of DS1520+ lets you start small and expand storage capacity with Synology DX517 as your data...

So this is basically the new DS1019+, as it shares CPU, case style, and likely motherboard with the DS920+, albeit with an extra enclosure port and NICs like the 15xx series of old. No more PCI either, instead DS918-style onboard NVMe slots. Plus there is no chance of upgrading to 10GbE.

Wondering whether Synology are unifying the motherboard designs and reducing design costs?

Just got one of these and going through installation.

In the UK the price difference between the DS920+ and DS1520+ was £130 (inc vat @ 20%) or £114 if you match the RAM with a Crucial 4GB module: so the price per bay is slightly cheaper with the DS1520+.

I can confirm that the RAM slot is fitted with the same Synology DD4 non-ECC 4GB module (D4NESO-2666-4G) that is listed for the DS720+ and DS920+: the module's online spec hasn't been updated yet to include the DS1520+.

The main reason for opting for the DS1520+ over the DS920+ is that there are more options for storage pools and hopefully the extra bay will put off having to upgrade for a long while. Having the four 1GE interfaces was intriguing to see what can be done with LAG plus dedicated connections [just ideas at the moment].

Today it will have two Ironwolf 8TB in SHR-1 but the plan is to grow this after the migration from the DS218+. My biggest challenge is settling on a backup strategy without having to buy yet more disks, for the moment.

Thinking where this sits in the DS family. The DS1520+ is more the successor to the DS1019+ in terms of styling and network connection types than it is the DS1517+. Why?
  • Gone is the DS1517+'s expandability with PCIe port
  • Styling is status and disk LEDs and right hand power button of the DS1019+
  • No longer any LAN LEDs: the bay caddies are from DS9xx+ not DS16xx+.
  • Reduction in USB3 ports
  • Power supply is the external brick and DIN connector used by lower-end plus models
  • Other than 5 bays and 2 eSata ports the DS15xx+ has now become the biggest 1GbE DS NAS rather than the smallest 10GbE DS NAS.
Still glad I got it, just hadn't spent time looking at what the DS1517+ had prior to it.

True successor to 1517 is 1621+ or better 1621xs+. This 1520 is, as you said a refresh of 1019 with 5 more drives support.
