Drive Tray Interchangability

I've only been using the J series and didn't realize there are so many different types of drive trays in the different series that have them. Are any of these interchangable? Because some cost a lot more than others.

Someone on reddit did a full analysis and found the following:

There are 25 different Synology drive tray models and last time I checked there were around about 275 different Synology NAS models, or 225 if you exclude the legacy models (10 series and older).

• Some trays only fit 1 model.
• Most fit a few models.
• The Type R7 fits 35 models.

Seems like something should be able to work between units because they can't all be that different.

The tray prices are just insane--even enterprise servers don't have trays this expensive (1/3 the price on the high side, usually 1/4 synology's trays). Seems to be a bit of par for the course in consumer nas units, but wow, what a big difference. I guess there must be at least 4x as many enterprise bays out there, and the secondhand market...

I'm with Samir they might have different types but they can't be that different.
Can the tray for a DS718+ really be different than a DS918+ and at 20% more cost.

Yep, this is where I'm coming from--because in the enterprise server world, there's usually just one design for a series of generations. And even different manufacturers trays will work with each other but maybe something like the led light pipes won't show the leds or the latch won't latch, etc.

In the Synology world, trays like the D7 are very, very basic. Can they fit where a D6 that's locking and latching work? Can the opposite work to bring locking trays to a more basic unit that only came with the D7? This is just my particular question, but with this many trays and devices, it makes sense to make a cross-reference table, even if synology doesn't want to.
