Hello,

I need some help.
I bought my first NAS and decided to buy the DS1821+.
I bought two hard disks from Seagate. One seems to be defect, I just hear some noise which does not sound very good and the other one can't be formatted.
The model of the hard disks is ST12000VNZ008.
When I try to format the disk it stops at 8% and shows me following error:
Hard disk could not be formatted (35).

What am I doing wrong? The hard disk is totally new and was never formatted.

I appreciate all help.

Best regards,
Michael

I start the Web Assistant.
Then I want to set up my NAS.
I click on set up and start the installation of the DSM.
I select the hard disk and start the installation.
First step says initialization.
With 8% progress I receive the error message that the hard disk could not be formatted.

Hi @Micha, welcome to the forum.

Can you explain exactly what you are doing. As @Telos says, the to setup the NAS you install the disks, switch it on, connect to the NAS, and follow the installation instructions. These will configure the storage.

EDIT: posted at the same time as your reply ^^^

That doesn't sound good from the drives.

Sorry, the screenshots are in German.
But I think you can see the steps I'm doing.

These are the Seagate 12TB drives that are listed as compatible with the DS1821+

ClassBrandModel NumberSeriesFirmwareCapacity

Enterprise NASSeagateST12000NE0008 - 2PK103IronWolf ProEN0212TB
NASSeagateST12000VN0008 - 2PH103IronWolfSC6112TB

Is ST12000VNZ008 a typing mistake?

As it's written here the Z means that this is special for Amazon but totally similar to the one without Z.

ST12000VNZ008/N0008

It's more clear on the german Amazon page:
Hinweis: Das "Z" in der Model Nummer beschreibt eine von Seagate speziell entwickelte, sturzgeprüfte Verpackung. ST12000VNZ008 & ST12000VN0008 stehen für das gleiche Produkt.

This means that the hard disk is differently packaged.

The label on the hard disk says that the model is ST12000VNZ008.

So I think that shouldn't be the problem.
