Greetings all.

I brought a couple 8TB WD Red Plus drives on prime day to swap out some old 3TB drives and give myself a capacity boost. Alas, after powering down the unit and replacing a drive, I was only to find that it was not in the supported database when I tried to use one in the repair operation.

So now the dilemma, give it a go, or attempt to return them / re-sell them.

It looks like they are legit CMR drives so I'm thinking there shouldn't be any issue, but I don't want to cause some catastrophic problem with my volume. My NAS isn't used for much except archiving / backups, and DS video streaming.

WD80EFZZ Drive Specs (page 3):

DSM recognized the drive, but barked at me when I tried to use it for repair.

I submitted a request to Synology to evaluate the drive, but I am skeptical that they will invest much time in that any time soon.

Anyone have any thoughts, like if similar drives are OK / NOT OK, or why the old DS412+ might have some issue them them?

I went through most of the compatibility list and didn't see DS412+ incompatible drives, but I'm not sure.

Regards,

hmm I got a DS 414 . and the max size there is 4TB per drive . . Maybe that is the issue?

Good point. DS412+ looks to be 32-bit cpu so max volume size of 16TB. So I think that means the capacity of the 8TB drives alone is OK, but if I used them with my existing 3TB drives in a volume, I'd exceed the maximum.

Now I have to ponder next steps.

You misunderstand. There is no size limit presently for SATA drives.
I was only to find that it was not in the supported database when I tried to use one in the repair operation.
As long as they are not on the INcompatibility list, this warning may be ignored. That said, Synology may decline future drive-related technical support. Many users deploy drives untested by Synology, including yours truly.

Keep in mind, that if you feel you must use "compatible" drive models, their firmware version must also match that specified on the compatibility list.

Have you ever heard the crazy answer’s you get when you ask about what firmware is on the drive you’re trying to buy?

Usually starts with: “Huh?”

The WD80EFZZ look to be on the compatibility list for newer 4 and 5 bay units (420+,920+,1522+) so perhaps i'll hold onto the drives for now and look to refresh my DS412+.

In the volume that you currently have is an older one (from DSM 5 period), then yes you might be hitting the 16TB limit that will not allow you to expand. The drive seems fine and supported, so guessing the issue here is not the drive being incompatible, but the DSM/volume support.

Thanks - the volume is indeed old, not sure what DSM version the DS412+ originally shipped with.

From what I can tell, the disk (/dev/md2) is presented by the SHR driver to lvm2.
The volume on md2 has 4mb extents so should scale to 256TB, but it looks like the DS412+ has a volume limit of 108TB (link)
The Atom D2701 in the DS412+ looks to be 64 bit so no issues addressing over 4GB.

Given the drive is compatible with newer 4 units, and it isn't listed as INcompatible with the DS412+, it feels like the WD80EFZZ should work. The drives also have the same firmware that is approved on the newer models.

Now, do I have the guts to try it out? still thinking about it...

Update - thanks for everyone's feedback. I replaced two of the 3TB drives with the most power on time with the 8TB drives (one at a time). The subsequent repair actions to add the new 8TB drives to the volume were successful (about 10 hours to perform each repair). The new drives are still showing healthy after a week of usage. Nice to have some space back.
