I couldn't bring up task manager to see what it was. Took ages to restart, finally it crashed, rebooted and came up telling me it needed to re-install.

Is there any way to recover the settings and previous share structure? Or is it all manual, based on walking the clients to make sure I have all the shares?

This is the sort of failure that makes me really want to consider an alternative solution.

Depending on the version of DSM running, some elements in DSM can be configured as a backup, as well as backup of all Synology official apps using Hyper Backup.

Also, backing up data is also something that can be backed up using Hyper Backup.

So the current question is what do you have in place regarding backup before this crash?

I have almost all the data. It was the config I want. And the time machine backups / Windows backups.

Now I have the dreaded error 35, with known good disks, so I have to overwrite and start from scratch it looks like.

What a mess.

So, with the ds418, which disk do I need to overwrite the partition table on, so I can re-install the OS?

Just leave the drive configuration as is. DSM partition is a hidden partition across all your drives, so no need to remove any specific drive or install DSM on a specific one.

Whoa. Before you do anything radical, try a mode 2 reset. It will rewrite the OS, and possible resolve the performance issues you see.

Mode 2 reset will not touch your files, but some settings will be reset to default.

First off, thank you both for the help.

Telos, how do I do a mode 2 reset? The device offered, once a reinstall attempting to preserve settings, now only a single "install" or "manual install" button.

Any action results in an error 35 can't format the disk. The disks show green under smart tests.

I don't know how to proceed.
