I asked this same queston over on the Synology reddit sub hereThis is a timely question for me, as I’m making some decisions to rearrange configs and build out a 723+ to act as a separate “home management” NAS, specifically for Surveillance Station and Home Assistant.
I have 2x off-brand NVMe working fine as cache in the 420+ that I was thinking I could put in a 723+ as a zippy volume for Home Assistant, but you’re saying that in order to do that, I need to buy the Syno-branded NVMe?

Do be aware this is an unofficial method that might break at any point during next DSM update or even a reboot (unlikely but still).
The "Official" Synology NVMe's must be gold plated for the price they sell for... I find it very hard to believe it is really that much "higher quality" that it demands the prices they are asking... While I do support the campaign I can tell you with 100% accuracy that will not happen considering how the company is currently aligned.I've submitted this as a featurerequest to Synology, to allow other brands than their own (very expensive). I suggest people to to the same, contact Synology! I'd love to turn my 4-bay DS923+ to a "6-bay" unit with NVMe's...
