I have a DS918+ and a DX517. I have one SHR volume on 4 x 8tb in the DS918+ and 3 x 8tb in the DX517 (so 2 slots left empty in the DX517). I want to put 16tb in the DS918+ and was wondering what is the best way to do it since I have 2 slots left in the DX517. Should I create a hot spare by inserting 1 x 8tb in the DX517 and once that's done, removing 1 x 8tb in the DS918+ and replacing it with a 1 x 16tb? Or should I just Hot swap those things?
My goal here is to eventually have 1 volume on the Ds918+ (with 4x 16tb) and 1 volume on the DX517 (8tb drives) as I often hear that it's not a great idea to have one volume over both device in case the cable fails. Whats your take on it? What is the most secure way of doing this? Considering that most of the data is already backed up on another device.

If the backup is sorted and atm you have two separate volumes, replacing drives via hot swap method seems a fine solution. Pull one, let it rebuild, continue with the next drive.

Thanks for the reply. I actually saw that their was the "replace disk" option. I'll try that to see if it's a good workaround the hotswap method.

This is the way, so there is no degraded volume risk. However... after the Replace Drive feature completes, you'll want to shut down everything, and move the 16 TB drive into the DS, so that your existing DS volume/pool is not spanned across to the DX.
