Hey,

Im looking for advice on migrating from raid1 to SHR. I currently have 2x14tb in my ds918+ running as raid 1. Im wanting to add a further 2x20tb but in an SHR setup. What is the best method to migrate over to this.

Heres what im thinking. Create a new pool as SHR, add 20tb HDD's, copy all data from 14tb HDD's to 20TB then delete 14tb storage pool and reformat hard drives. Is this possible and correct?

You can't add (smaller) 14 TB drives to an SHR pool consisting of 20 TB drives.

You can only destroy the RAID 1, starting over, and restore from your backup, if you want 14+14+20+20.

To prevent the long backup and restore process, You can do as you proposed twice. As Telos mentioned 14+14+20+20

Something like:

1) Add the two 20tb as new SHR pool in the empty bays, move your data using relocating the shared folders to the new disks.
2) backup the required packages with HB to the new 20TB SHR
3) initialise the existing 2x14 tb as SHR, and move back your shared folders from the 20TB, restore Hb.
4) Then you can initialize the 20TB and add them both to the SHR

Appreciate the replies. I have made the 2x20TB SHR, its taking roughly 24 hours to transfer a full 14TB of data over. I'm just going to sell the 2x14tb drives and get another 2x20tb. I dont want to be copying the data back to the 14tb again to be honest.
