I’m currently on the latest DSM (7.1.1-42962 update 2), since the last update installed my configuration backups are failing. Both the automatic one and trying to manually backup too. They both have the same error code of ”Operation failed. Please sign in to DSM again and retry”. I’ve done that, as well as restarting my NAS.
Any ideas I could try before contacting Synology? Thankfully I’ve been manually backing up the configuration regularly and I haven’t made any changes since the last backup, but I’d like to find out why it’s failing.

Have you verified that you are in fact signed into your Synology Account? The backup will not work unless signed in.

This seems to be a generic (and pretty unhelpful ) error message that can show for a variety of problems.
If it is only the automatic backups that fail, it could be due to a problem connecting to the Synology servers, eg: Synology Community
In the meantime, just run a manual backup and report the bug to Synology.

So an update to this issue. I got a notification that an optimization on the drives (I think that's what it said) had taken place and to reboot. I did and it resolved itself, it now has no issue with the configuration backups.

Manual backups failed with the same error.

Have you rebooted?
I had tried rebooting it to see if that would help.
