So, I have a DS1552+ with 12TB drives (in a SHR-2 array) and I'm looking at a backup solution. I'm curious, if people think running a DX517 with a second, matching pool would be alright for one tier of backup? It's hard to find large enough drives to be backed up for the array at this size. The biggest single hard drive I can find is a 22TB by Western Digital. (I know I should also have an external drive off-site for ideal backup).

You could back up data to the DX517, just understand that it depends on the DS1522+ for it to be accessible. Should the DS1522+ experience a failure, you would not be able to retrieve data on the DX until the DS1522+ is repaired/replaced.
