Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue where Finder on macOS sometimes crashes when opening image files (PNGs, JPEGs, PDFs, TIFFs) stored on my Synology NAS over SMB. The problem is intermittent but disruptive. This is happening to multiple users across many OSX versions on a variety of machines.

I've tried the following to no avail:
  • Verified network connectivity and hardware.
  • Reviewed file permissions.
  • Adjusted SMB settings (SMB2 minimum, SMB3 maximum, enabled Mac OS SMB compatibility).
  • Disabled media indexing and thumbnail generation on the NAS.
Questions:

  • Are there known compatibility issues between macOS and Synology NAS when accessing image files over SMB?
  • Could thumbnail generation or preview conflicts be causing Finder to crash?
  • What SMB settings are recommended for optimal compatibility with macOS?
  • Any additional steps I can take to resolve this issue?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you tried a different protocol to confirm this issue is with SMB? Really sounds like it could be a MacOS issue.
