Hello there guys!
I am a synology newbie and I would like your help please. I pluged my NAS into router and also at my desktop and I see 2 ips on assistant.
I guess the 192.168.1.38 is the local IP correct?

When I login from 169.254.146 ip my admin name and password works.
Do I need to configure other codes and users for the LAN login?
Because I enter the same name and password and I get wrong password error.

thanks a lot!

192.168.1.38 is the IP from your Router.
169.254.146 is the IP that windows is assigning you between the 2 units.
Why are you connecting this directly to your PC? this will not give the NAS an internet connection and only let you administer from your PC to the NAS. the NAS is made to live on your network so all other endpoints ( and internet connected endpoints outside your home ) can talk to it as well.

Are you using the admin account? or did you make an new admin account?

Windows could only assign an IP address to the NAS if it were administering DHCP. the 169. IP is a default address assigned by DSM that indicates no connectivity to that Interface.

I thought that pcs/desktops that can plugged straight to the NAS would have higher transfer speed rates rather going through router.
Also if I go through router then the NAS and the laptop have LAN transfer speeds or the transfer speeds are limited to my broadband connection speeds? (Sorry for the noon questions..)

Transfer rates are primarily limited by your devices' network card.

Your broadband rate has no effect (it can even be down).

So everyone connects his desktop/laptop to the NAS always through router? I thought thats how the ethernet slots meant to be used...

If both devices are using wired LAN, then throughput should be maximized. If you are using WiFi, then typically transfer rates will be reduced depending on your WiFi card/signal. Only in special circumstances would I connect directly to the NAS, as I have multiple devices which depend on NAS access.

Do what works for you.

So you think if I connect all my devices through router it would be better than direct plugged? (I am not using WiFi)

when you say router we are talking about a WAN port and multiple LAN ( ethernet ports ) unless you have a gateway with a single wan port and a single lan port that would go to a multiport switch. In which case every wired device should be plugging into your switch, which is usually gigabit speeds ( PC NIC, NAS )

This is what a "network" is, and the primary reason for the router. Otherwise, you would just use a modem to connect a single device to the "internet".

Ye I understand, but I wanted to avoid another device (router) compared to straight plugged because I thought I would have worse speeds.
Will connect them all through router and lets hope all this dhcp etc thing will work better...

Thanks I'll bear that in mind for the future. It's all a moot point now as it turns out that NextDNS was...
