UPDATE: Have seen the failure on a third Mac. This posting from the SuperDuper folks points to a macOS bug: Shirt Pocket Watch - You’re a Mean One

Please consider this preliminary - I am still troubleshooting. ABB backup jobs for two Macs here have started failing coincident with those systems upgrading to macOS Sequoia 15.2 (from 15.1). DSS, ABB Package and ABB Agent fully up-to-date. Jobs now taking a very long time, GB transferred increases but percentage done ceases to update around 70 or 80 percent done and some time later backup fails with error -3 (Failed to run asr).

This might be local to my circumstances but wanted to post this heads up in case anyone is observing failures (or continued success) post 15.2

Thanks everyone for posting here. I've had the same issue (error -3) of ABB failing on an M2 and an M4 since updating to 15.2. Very frustrating!

Whatever the cause (macOS bug or ABB bug) I see little excuse for Synology not knowing about this AND informing everyone. There are developer betas of macOS for a reason.

If I may add... last night's ABB task also completed successfully. So now both it and CCC run as expected. I wonder if there is something within the macOS updater that changes expected file-level permissions, that these are correctly set by third party software on its files during installed? Or could be a security privilege/permission that somehow gets silently revoked, or not retested after application install. The number of re-OK'ing of permissions for applications to do stuff in Sonama after a reboot is a little tiring... it's not an iPhone! Maybe the Sequoia 15.2 update and reboot hadn't fully completed its script of things to test, it felt like there was more nagging after the reboot after the crash than after the update.

ABB Server: v2.7.0-23221
DSM: v7.2.2-72806 Update 2
NAS: DS218+ (wired 1 GbE to LAN switch #2, primary VLAN)

ABB Client: v2.7.0-3221
macOS: 15.2 (24C101)
Mac: Mac Mini M1 (wired 10 GbE to LAN switch #1, primary VLAN)
LAN switches #1 and #2 interconnected via 4x1 GbE LAG.
Mac is set to never sleep, which might be something since the previous link to SuperDuper! mentioned sleep could be a cause.

Just saw this online might be related to this issue with ABB.

Apple's latest macOS Sequoia 15.2 update has introduced a critical bug that prevents the popular backup utility SuperDuper from creating bootable backups, according to the app's chief developer, Shirt Pocket's Dave Nanian.

superduper macos

The issue stems from a "Resource Busy" error that occurs during the final stages of the backup process when attempting to copy system preboot or recovery files. While similar errors in the past could be resolved by keeping the system awake during backup, Ninian reports that this new bug appears to be more fundamental.

The problem originates from Apple's earlier decision to restrict third-party apps from directly copying the operating system, instead requiring them to use Apple's own replication tools. With these tools now malfunctioning in macOS 15.2, SuperDuper and potentially other backup utilities are unable to create complete bootable backups.

As a temporary workaround, SuperDuper users can still back up their applications, data, and settings using the app's "Backup - all files" option with "Smart Update" enabled. However, this method won't create a bootable backup that can be used for immediate system recovery.

Shirt Pocket has filed a bug report with Apple and is awaiting a resolution, but Nanian is keen to emphasize that since the issue lies within Apple's system components, third-party developers cannot implement their own fixes.

The timing of this bug is particularly concerning for users who rely on bootable backups as part of their data protection strategy, especially given the recent release of macOS 15.2 and the potential for other undiscovered issues. Have you been affected by the bug? Let us know in the comments.

Had time to try getting ABB to work on the second Mac Mini M1. This one refuses to get passed 0% on the backup stage. I've done all the things I did to get my Mac Mini M1 working. It's just sitting there doing nothing. I know that its weekly CCC backup task has been successful since the macOS 15.2 update.

I can confirm that the problem exists with Apple silicon only, I have 2 iMacs running 15.2 with Intel chips that are backing up without errors. One M1 mini and one M2 mini that fail on two different NAS. all running 15.2. one M1 MacBook pro running 15.1.1. is also backing up fine.

While reporting the issue with ABB on Sequoia Version 15.2 (24C101) through the support center Synology reported this message acknowledging the problem. I guess it's wait and see for now

Thank you for providing required logs and you are right with new release of Sequoia 15.2 on going backups are experiencing issue, seems some new changes under MacOS are causing disruption.
Same problem on M3 MBP. It seems to run for hours - creates multiple file images, then craps out at somewhere in mid 70%.
Above note from Syno support.
Waiting for MAC OS 15.3

Synology: DS720+
MBP: M3 Sequoia 15.2

More from Synology Suppoort:

The issue you are experiencing appears to have originated with changes introduced in macOS 15.2 Sequoia. Specifically, Apple seems to have modified or restricted the ASR (Apple Software Restore) service, which is utilized by backup software like Synology’s Active Backup for Business (ABB). These changes are interfering with the creation of backup snapshots, which is why the backup process fails after several hours leading to errors during backup processes on affected systems.

Our developers are actively investigating this matter and have reached out to Apple for further clarification and support. However, since the root cause lies within macOS, the timeline for a permanent resolution will depend on Apple's addressing of the issue in a future update.

In the meantime, I recommend keeping an eye on Apple's release notes. This issue is being monitored through the Apple bug tracker. You can search for the keyword "Apple FB16090831" to find updates from Apple regarding the progress of this issue. Additionally, you can subscribe to Synology's newsletter to receive notifications about developments or fixes as they become available.

macOS 15.3 public beta, still no change. 5x increment attempts, then -3 error, and then again a full backup that failed at 88%.

Update from Syno:

We have noticed that macOS 15.3 public beta will meet the same issue.

Furthermore, our developer has reported this case to Apple DTS and they have recorded the bug ID FB16090831.

Since they are currently on vacation, we think it should take longer to fix the issue.

We appreciate your understanding since it cannot fixed from the server side.

From everything I'm reading on the trade rags this may be a "feature" not a "bug" of future Apple software updates. Looks like TM is the only current alternative at the moment - and for me it's not been the most reliable backup solution.
Not a happy Apple camper! Guess we wait and see.

I have the same issue. Received the following from Synology support:
After reviewing the logs, we suspect the issue may be related to a file generated by macOS speech recognition. This appears to be a macOS bug, which Apple has documented under bug ID FB16090831
To address this issue, please let us know if you agree to delete the file or move it to an external drive for backup. Kindly note that deleting or moving these files may impact the functionality of macOS speech recognition.

Once you confirm, I will proceed with deleting or moving the file as part of the resolution process.
Interesting note about this 'speech recognition file'. I'm waiting for them to take action and will let you all know how it turns out.

So far I'm still experiencing the same as before: my MM M1 still works and the other MM M1 doesn't. CCC still works on both

UPDATE...

Got the second Mac Mini M1 to complete a backup.

What I did was to log out the Mac ABB agent, using a DSM administrator account. Then used Mac's Disk Utility to delete the ActiveBackupforBusiness_Reserved AFPS volume on the Mac's primary drive. Then finally I logged the agent back in using the DSM user's account. Kicked off a backup manually in DSM ABB from the task list.

Will this now continue to work? We'll see.

UPDATE #2

Initiated another backup on second Mac Mini M1. It also successfully completed.

Same issue here, since updating to Sequoia 15.2 on M2 Max MBP. I've only noticed yesterday while doing manual backup, that there are no automatic backups since half December. No Failed backups reported, no notification, not a word from Synology. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Agent a few times, but no improvement. I have noticed a new ABB Agent 2.7.1-3234 and ABB Package 2.7.1-23234 versions yesterday with Sequoia support (only took half a year 🤷‍♂️), but those don't solve the issue either. Only by trying to submit a ticket I have noticed the ASR / Sequoia bug being reported.

All it does is to backup the drive once (looking at amount of transmitted data and size of IMG files on NAS), but then it starts again from 0, while constantly showing 87% progress (data size increasing) and it runs like that indefinitely.

ABB is slowly becoming pretty useless mess.

This is not an abb issue. It’s sequoia problem that will be hopefully fixed soon now that the holidays are over.

As support has noted in the ticket reply’s, Apple is aware of this issue.

The 87,88% mark that happens 5 times for incremental backup and then 5 times for full before finally failing is the default behavior by the looks of it.

What I did was
Will give this ago right now

UPDATE
Nope, again with 5x trying to do full backup, this time not getting over 67%, ended with -3 error again (15.3 beta)

Boo!

Got to say, I’ve no idea how I’ve managed to get it working when everyone else is having problems.

On the second Mac Mini I found the CCC weekly backup hadn’t been working too. I created a new task and recreated the USB backup destination, and now that works.
