I'm a little unclear. I have a ds1621+ with 4x 1gbe ports, link aggregated to my netgear managed switch. If get a 4 port nic for my pc and do the same for them, create a 4x 1gbe link aggregation on my switch (same switch the nas is plugged into) would I then effectively get 4gbe between the pc and nas? Or at least >1gbe connection and transfer speed?

No. Transfer speed will not increase.
At best you will increase band width, with multiple clients.

it is like a street; you can add lanes, but cars will not drive faster, speed limit remains the same.
The current implementation of ethernet is not capable to split a single file, sent the 4 pieces simultaneously to the client and merge the file again.
It can sent multiple files at the same time though, but only to different clients/from different connections.

Splitting the file 4 way and reassembling it on the other side is got to be the best way I've heard this described and finally makes 100% sense to me. Still sad though.

I would have loved to go 10gbe but it's still way too price prohibitive for me.

Thanks for the clear explanation.
